It's pretty nice out today in CT so I decided to go through the spring ritual of getting the 308 up and running. For 28 years, in the fall I have pulled it into the garage, disconnected the battery, threw the cove over it and forgot it. In the spring I take the cover off, reconnect the battery and give it a whirl. No different this year, 1, 2, 3, rummmmm! No trickle charger, no gas stabilizers, no nothing. Park it, forget it,....6 months later, get in it, start it.

    Good for Ya.

I have not met a battery yet that will survive a German winter w/o a trickle charger hooked-up at least intermittently.

I see what you mean. You forget her for 6 months only to return to find a battery staying charged and the car ready to rock and roll. If you had meant that you had never had a single thing wrong with the car, then I would not believe it. No plug extenders, no relay, no fuse boards, no ignition wires, no rotors, no dizzy caps, no bearings, no oil leak problems? Well, that would be a first.

    30524 miles and counting.

By the way, for our German friend, my battery is 12 years old! I'm convinced that trickle chargers are battery killers.

Not so sure myself. 10 year old battery still going strong with intermittent driving all year. I doubt that would be the case without my battery tender. You unplug the battery I assume?

I unplug the battery when ever the car is in the garage, even during driving season. It's so easy to pop the hood and disconnect the ground.

Pretty much the same story here, although there have been some minor mechanical issues. 1983 one-owner 308 GTSi. I do the majority of work, and we have spent many enjoyable moments, both on the road, and in the shop.

I agree, I also just unplug - every time after a drive. nothing else needed.

One of the benefits of having older cars with ECUs that don't re-set & erase all the learned data tables --- on the newer cars, constantly disconnecting the battery has its downsides, too ---- ahhhh, the simpler days ;).

It's even easier for me. In 1977, the original owner had Algar install this battery disconnect switch in the spare wheel well of my 1976 GTB...

Yep, I use a trickle charger on my 07 Boxster during the winter just for that reason. While I don't like to, it's better than having to go through the ECU reset procedure. Still, I don't leave it connected all the time.

I dont see why a German winter should be considered so severe- European winters (excluding Russia, which many geographers dont consider as "Europe")are not even close as being cold as northern states in N America. European winters are downright mild. Now N. Norway, thats different.

Batteries in northern states last for years. You could have other problems with your elecs if batt lasts only one season.
