Bali plane crash: Miracle escape for 108 passengers as plane overshoots runway and lands in the SEA | Mail Online

    Lion air's track record :

On 14 January 2002, Lion Air Flight 386, a Boeing 737-200 crashed on take-off and was written off; no one was killed.

On 30 November 2004, Lion Air Flight 538, a McDonnell Douglas MD-82, crashed in Surakarta, killing 25 people.[27]

On 4 March 2006, Lion Air Flight 8987, a McDonnell Douglas MD-82, crashed after landing at Juanda International Airport.[28] Reverse thrust was used during landing, although the left thrust reverser was stated to be out of service.[28] This caused the aircraft to veer to the right and skid off the runway, coming to rest about 7,000 feet (2,100 m) from the approach end of the runway.[28] No-one was killed but the aircraft was badly damaged.[28]

On 24 December 2006, Lion Air Flight 792, a Boeing 737-400, landed with an incorrect flap configuration and was not aligned with the runway.[29] The plane landed hard and skidded along the runway causing the right main landing gear to detach, the left gear to protrude through the wing and some of the aircraft fuselage to be wrinkled.[29] No one was killed and the aircraft was written off.[29]

On 2 November 2010, Lion Air Flight 712, a Boeing 737-400 (registration PK-LIQ) overran the runway on landing at Supadio Airport, Pontianak, coming to rest on its belly and sustaining damage to its nose gear. All 174 passengers and crew evacuated by the emergency slides, with few injuries reported.[30]

On 13 April 2013, Lion Air Flight 960, a Boeing 737-800 (registration PK-LKS) from Bandung to Denpasar (Indonesia) with 108 people on board, landed short of runway 09 while landing in Denpasar/Bali. The aircraft broke up in two parts. All occupants were evacuated from the aircraft and have been taken to hospitals. [31]

I thought this thread was going to be about 787 batteries, or at the least freighters carrying lithium ion batteries!

They're a very lucky airline to have had so few fatalities from so many accidents. But with problems like assymetric flaps and non-functioning thrust reversers, you'd have to seriously question their maintenance procedures.

    Lion Air...

    Banned from EU (safety).

A number of pilots and crew caught w/ crystal meth... failed drug tests.

Ordering hundreds and hundreds of planes from Boeing and Airbus.

    Strange.

Does landed short of runway mean it never reached the runway? I'm amazed if that is the case as surely the plane would be a little ball of twisted metal?

Several reports said it landed short of the runway. Not true.

It actually landed on the runway but continued without stopping and off the end of the runway... into shallow water. Broke apart.

Cause not known at the present.

I don't believe that was the case. I have heard that they did in fact land short.

If you look at some of the pictures, you will note that there is no hole in the fence by the runway-- the fence they would have gone through if they had run off the end.

If this were a US or European Airlines, their AOC will be revoked.

I have seen reports of both a short landing and an overrun. Both.

This is a perfect example of a Too-big-to-fail company

Lion Air - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Boeing Signs Record $22.4 Billion Lion Air Order for 737s

Lion Air set a record when it placed an order for 230 aircraft from Boeing, making this the largest order in terms of aircraft ordered as well the cost of the order. In November 2011, Lion Air and Boeing announced that the airline planned to buy 29 737-900ER and 201 737 MAX aircraft, with options for 150 more, valued at $21.7 billion at the time.[9] A firm order was signed on 14 February 2012, with the 737 MAX aircraft identified as 737 MAX 9s, making Lion Air the launch customer for that variant.[21] By the time of the signing, the order's value had risen to $22.4 billion at list prices, the largest aircraft order in history.[21] Additionally, the engines for the -900ERs, CFM 56-7s, cost about $580 million and the engines for the MAXs, CFM LEAP-1Bs, cost about $4.8 billion.[21] Deliveries of the -900ERs are to start in 2016, with the MAXs to follow in 2017.[21]
Airbus Break Boeing record by $24 billion Lion Air Order for A320s

On Monday 18 March 2013 Lion Air placed an order for 234 A320 jets with Airbus, the largest single order ever made surpassing previous record by Boeing ($22.4 Billion).

The contract, which was signed at the Elysée Palace in the presence of President François Hollande and several government ministers, is worth €18.4 billion ($24 billion) at catalogue prices, the French presidency said.[22]

In a rare interview with The Star in Malaysia in late 2012, Lion Air’s rags-to-riches founder Rusdi Kirana said that Indonesians in the middle-income bracket were already flying to neighbouring Singapore and Malaysia. “This group will later think of Hong Kong or even Canton (Guangzhou, in southern China). And when they have more money they will want to travel to Japan, Korea, north China or Australia,” he said.[23]
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Total of $46.4 Billion to Airbus and Boeing.

    As usual...
    Blame it on the weather.

The Indonesian evens find it difficult to take the blackbox from the tail section because they said the plane is submerged in water.

    Yeah... 6 feet of water.

Here is the last paragraph from the above article.

Last year, another Lion Air pilot, Muhammad Nasri, and co-pilots Imron and Husni Thamrin were arrested in Tangerang in possession of ecstasy pills and meth. They had bought the drugs right before flying from Jakarta to Surabaya, but the airline denied they were high during the flight.

Maybe if they were high (er) they wouldn't have crashed!
