Don't I long for this day..... That would be appreciated if you do find out anything about the origin of the fire. I am not rebuilding this twice!
We are stuck on our engine and gearbox rebuild. Ferrari being Ferrari, it appears that there is no info in the workshop manual whatsoever on engine and gearbox tolerances. Looking through an F355 workshop manual it is all there, it effectively shows you how to put it all back together, tolerances, torque settings, diagrams, the lot. $500 later on F40 workshop manuals and we are none the wiser. Does anyone know of any book or manual or anything that gives all these settings/tolerances as it seems to me to be saying 'senda ita back to Italeee'!
Don't know if it helps, but you might want to contact Forza Service or Roelofs Engineering here in The Netherlands. Gr. Martin
Pretty sure you have this manual: http://axisofoversteer.com/blog/documents/OwnersManual-F40_USA_1992.pdf But in case or for others persons, interesting information and well done!
Tim, do you have the workshop manual AND the service manual or only the workshop manual? EDIT: I am looking through the service manual now and it has all the diagrams about how to put it back together but I"m not seeing torque settings and such...
Pretty sure both, but speaking to many people, race teams, main dealers etc Ferrari did keep all this info to themselves. The best bit of info I have so far is to base the engine on 328 specs but no one can even suggest anything on the gearbox?
Yes, it's looking like I have diagrams in this book for everything but no specs at all. It only has book times for jobs. Sorry I can't be of more help.
Thanks anyway Ryan, it appears one has to be a member of some obscure italian secret society to get this info.
Tim, I do not know is this info is good for you but I just spoke with Scott Gresham at "Ferrari of Houston" regarding the information you are seeking. I asked him about your concerns and he said basically some of that information is unattainable. He said he has rebuilt many Ferrari engines and gear boxes without any factory manual and that common sense is the best manual (in a matter of speaking). Naturally a steel nut will shread aluminum threads. So in summary he did not think you will find any manual with specifics. I know when I was doing 99% of the maintenance on my MR2's I quickly learned to "FEEL" the tool I was using and not to go "Oh just one more torque and it will be set". Best, Gregg
Well whilst we are somewhat stuck on resolving our engine and gearbox issues, progress on the front suspension at least. Track rod ends are hanging as bespoke rose joints are awaited from Italy. As you can see, front all now 'soft' mounted pending arrival of the rear suspension which needless to say was promised for last week and the week before etc etc but is still with Michelotto. Once we have that we can fit rear suspension and the uprights for the front, all brakes and anti roll bars front and rear and then take it all off again so as to finally start to finish the chassis, getting it top coated in the silver. Then we can start to move forward properly and to have a finished effectively rolling chassis would be a major landmark, probably even a half way point? this project is super, very very nice, working on getting that LM look, that I love, but wish I could fit these wheels on.Will have to get something made up to get near it.As well as these fit a different hub?LM lager?.........well done mate, shes a beaut!. Thanks for that. I only hope it turns out rather more than the 'look'! As to the hubs, being genuine LM hubs they wont accept standard OZ rims, or for you the other way around-standard hubs will not accept these race rims but I do have a set off the car which ran on more standard hubs which I am probably selling. Nice pics by the way!
yeah I tried but didnt get passed the simple just wont fit and wouldnt even turn.pics are from my son who details high end cars.Post some pics of wheels you might sell, cheers.Keep up the great thread.
What an awesome project to witness. You're truly resurrecting history here! It's great to see someone willing to put in the blood, sweat, tears, and capital to bring back a car like this that would have otherwise been lost to the ages. I can't wait to see how it turns out. Hopefully you get your gearbox/engine issues resolved in short order.
For those interested in the detail, acting on C Michelotto's advice, we are changing the longer geared Euro spec Crownwheel and Pinion for the shorter geared USA version. This car was apparently timed at 227 MPH with the Euro version, but it is a rare track where you can avail yourself of this, hence the decision to add even more to the acceleration potential. The large gearbox nuts (I believe they are grade 10 or 12, very hard) tightening the main and layshafts for both clockwise and anti-clockwise directions nuts for every Ferrari I have seen torque at 135lbs. Hope that helps a little anyway!
