https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWBV2XCY40o What do the 355 owners here think? Great sound? Too loud? I would love to see this car and a 355 blast through a tunnel at the same time
I've listened to both of them in person many a time. THe 458 WISHES it sounded like a 355. Next to the 355 it sounds very synthetic and lacks the screeching highs or the musicality of the 355. I am not taking away from the 458, which sounds fantastic in its own right, but I have yet to hear another Ferrari that sounds as beautiful as the 355, though the stradale comes REAL close.
^this And if I may add: the 458 in the video did sound fantastic and very close but it's not quite a 355 just yet IMHO
I know I'm hard on the 355. But I'll put money that no other car will top it for sound..ever. The 348 with a race tubi and test pipes is very close, but its not as "smooth". best sounding car ever built.
I thought this one was close too: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOQFKgvA9AU&feature=youtube_gdata_player]Ferrari 360 dyno exhaust flames pulling 2nd thru 6th - YouTube[/ame] But it still isn't quite an F355 with a stage 3 Capristo
That was sick. But I'm for the 355. I am not a higher spider fan, but I would love to have a 355 spider with a capristo.
Funny I was just having this discussion the other day... The 458 is awe inspiring without a doubt. Quite possibly the best *all around* supercar you can buy IMO. That said, the 355 still has the better soundtrack to my ear. Maybe the *best possible* soundtrack you can get in a street car.
The 458 doesn't have 5 valves per cylinder like the 355 or 360, that's why it will always lack that high pitched urgency. 4 valves may be a better design but 5 valves is just romantic
I'm not so sure that's why the 355 sounds the way it does. It may have 3 intake valves, but it still only has 2 exhaust valves. That and it does rev to 8500/rpm. I'm of the opinion that the reason for the 355's exhaust note has to do with the exhaust bypass, and the different length it has to travel vs the path through the cats. Plus the bypass pipes merge into one pipe. That is where I'm guessing the unique tone comes from. The varied lengths have the sound waves exiting at different times, and so you are hearing multiple tones. You are hearing the by pass notes in-between the non bypassed notes. Just my guess, and I could be totally wrong. Anyhoooo, Novitec did a fantastic job with that exhaust system. It sounds badass.
F355 = Lower displacement, 5 valves per cylinder, individual throttle bodies. No comparison. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49b0rTj-D-E]Ferrari highway invasion - YouTube[/ame] F355 vs 430, 360, 458. The high pitched screaming sound from the 355 is unmatched.
IMO a 348 or 355 with a Kreissieg is hard to beat : [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGy9kDFMDMM]Ferrari 348 kreissieg?Start F1 Valvetronic Exhaust System - YouTube[/ame]
Owning a capristo 3 equipped 355 and having driven a 458 a good bit my thoughts are that the 458 is the best sounding Ferrari since the 355 and it convinced me to go for a 458 as my next Ferrari. It isn't that it sounds just like a 355, but it sounds just as good. Not as shreiking as the 355 but has a certain instrumental tone to it, just nice.
Sorry but in my opinion not even close. Even though I think the 458 is one of the best looking cars ever built and maybe even better looking than the 355, when it comes to sound just compare the clips on this thread between the 58 and the 55, no comparison the 355 just sounds cleaner and much more crisp.
Call me old fashioned but part of what makes the 355, especially the 6 speed F355, sound so good is the slight pause between gear changes when accelerating. The newer F1 trannies with their lightning-fast upshifts almost make gear changes imperceptible...almost like a video game.
The true sound of the 355 is revealed with test pipes. The cats , high-flow or not, tend to muffle the sound. The muffler can only do so much regardless of the brand. From what I've heard so far, MS-Racing exhaust gives a very nice high-pitched tone.
this vid says it all 355 vs 458 can I swap the 355 engine into the 458, I don't care to go 180mph; just want to sound good getting there [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vhg2SzmCdi4]Bil-TV: Ferrari 355 Berlinetta vs. 458 Italia - YouTube[/ame]
That nice little pop rumble is addicting for sure even at slow speeds. We put a external microphone on the rear of my 355 and got this sound putting around, got to love it. Pop fat burb fizz wammy LOL Turn it up loud... [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkkri0Q6VA8]Long Beach Grand Prix - YouTube[/ame]
