    I think just putting them back together. As parts of the doors, I think the doors are the most difficult thing to do on a Dino. With the new rubber vent on a spider it comes in 2 pieces that need to be trimmed, there is also a metal support piece where the new holes never line up with old and new ones have to be drilled. I like the Superformance ones the best for replacement.

    Clearly a car that had character, history and original finishes preserved for 40 years that are now long gone.

    The pursuit of perfection is fine for cars clearly needing work, but this just doesn't seem the right candidate.

    Or is it?

    To each his own. That's what makes the world go round. I was never really into preserving rust, grime, cracked tires, dents, rotten rubber, spider webbed paint, worn and soiled carpets etc. As far as history it was driven 67,000 miles in and around Oakland and the only character I see is a run down, worn 40 year old car in desperate need of everything. The brake rotors had grooves worn 1/4 inch into the surface is this part of that character and history you want preserved. If everybody thought like you I wouldn't have anything to do in my golden years!

    Thanks for editing your post. It paints a clearer picture or your intention. Your simple "it makes the world go around" response just alluded to profits and nothing else.

    This is an incredible project, which you will no doubt pour much passion and energy into, and kindly share on this board.

    But I don't think this car required any restoration whatsoever, and there we will disagree.

    Look up 1953 Ferrari 375 MM 0382AM, or any of the untouched, unrestored cars that have been lovingly preserved over the years.

    I had no intention of alluding to profits, more to what a dull world this would be if we all thought the same. I really dislike the concept that we are mere caretakers of a car while in our possession. Whomever owns the car can do want they want and more power to them.. My hobby is restoring cars not lovingly watch them eventually disintegrate.

    As per your post 25 Jon you said there was no issues or rust which is remarkable for a car of this age, if above pics are all thats wrong then losing that little bit of history isnt the end of the world.

    The rear lower body panel directly aft of the rear wheels is a double layer sandwich of two sheet metal pieces and notorious for trapping rust.
    Keep up this great work!

    Yes rgat part seems to be a consumable item.
    After the first one went, i added a vent hole and sprayed inside
    With oil. Any one have a better system?

    So clean it up. They are only original once. Maybe these cars aren't significant enough to warrant preservation.

    You would think the experts would know when to leave a car alone.

    How much better does it have to get before every component is stripped of its original finish and powder coated? Did the factory even powder coat these components? Have you seen what 20 year old powercoat looks like?

    Some people (including experts) are into preservation, patina, and originality which is great, others see that as old, musty, and decaying and like things redone, also cool. There is no right or wrong, up to the owner .....

    You can spend your time better in a preservation thread. This is a restoration thread per how the new owner wants it. Different strokes for different folks! I've never claimed to be an expert either only an enthusiast.

    You do this really quickly. I am looking in the compendium you sent us right now for colors. There are a lot of colors that look good on this car. How long does it take you to put the car back together?

    Hello Michael, it's great to meet! I hope you enjoy the book and I'm glad you're following the progress. As far as time goes, it will take me a month to restore the parts, rebuild brakes, steering, suspension etc etc etc. During this time the motor is being rebuilt and the interior is being done. The painting and surfacing take about 3 months which just started last week. When the car comes back it will take about 5 weeks plus to get it all back together. Are you leaning towards any colors yet?? It will also take 2 plus weeks to drive it back to you in New York the long way! Your Dad says you're really in charge of this project.

    I did and I found a car with paint peeling on the firewall, etc. IMO the car needs to be restored and then raced again, restored and then raced again and so on.

    Cars are mechanical objects and when they were originally built they were built to be "cars" and in this case race. While I understand many cars are over restored and that is a shame, and modern standards of race car preparation are way better than they used to be, Ferrari would not have turned up with 0382AM looking like that when it was current.

    The biggest problem with people that restore cars is that the cars are NOT used properly afterwards and thus they never get a chance to grow patina again. Is that the restorers fault? No it is the owners.

    Jay Leno has the right attitude: Restore, wear out again, re-restore and then re-wear out again and repeat until you cannot smile anymore :).

    I agree. This car was too original and nice to be taken apart. Cars are only original once. The work you do is beautiful and perfect, but IMO this was far from a candidate for a full restoration. Shame to take apart and restore a no-accident, original car like this. I hope to see your restorations on many cars in the future and wish you a speedy recovery on your hand, but can we all please agree to preserve the few remaining originals rather than treat them to a full unnecessary restoration? There are many restoration candidates out there, but very few originals left. :(

    So buy an original and preserve it and YOU can save one of the few originals left. It's as simple as that. My hobby is restoring.
