This may seem like a silly question but mechanics isn't my strong suit.. at the rear of the transmission case on my 348 there is a slow CLEAR fluid dripping. Its obviously not oil. I first thought that it was condensation because it has never leaked anything in the past. This is a new occurrence. I thought that it was transmission fluid since the drip was coming right off the back of the case, but I read that this fluid is yellow. I also read that clutch fluid is clear, but is that near the rear of the car?

Im going to have it into my mechanic in the next day or so for an oil change anyway, but if I can isolate the issue that could be one thing that he doesn't have to look at.

Anyone from the brotherhood have any ideas? Collectively you all know everything :)

Clutch/Brake fluid can be clear. Usally has a destinct odor if it is not synthetic. The bleed valve for the clutch is towards the rear of the case just to the left of center.

It did have a unique smell to it and it had the consistency of water. Wasn't thick like an oil or a lubricant of some kind. It did have a very odd smell..

But would there also be a brake fluid reservoir near that part of the rear center of the car? Im thinking clutch fluid since the transmission is right there? What do you think?

Brake and clutch use the same hydraulic fluid, from the same reservoir in the front trunk area. If the fluid you see is coming out of the perforated plate below the clutch, it's fluid from the clutch slave cylinder. Probably needs new seals. Check your brake/clutch fluid level before you drive anywhere.

Yep, that's it. The slave cylinder for the clutch is in the rear and if the seals start leaking they will deposit fluid underneath the clutch housing in the back. As noted the reservior for the brake and clutch fluid are one in the same in the front of the car, check that level. If it is low you are no doubt losing brake/clutch fluid. You can get the seals from Ricmabi.

See I knew you guys knew everything! What is really bizarre is the car set for a few days completely cold and started leaking randomly. And then as randomly as it started, it stopped. But I appreciate your input. I will look under the hood tomorrow before I take it out. Is there a particular hydraulic fluid that you recommend that I replace it with? I will have to use something standard from a typical auto supply store for now. I don't have anything specialty related really close to me outside of the typical autozone type stores.

Needs to be DOT 4 brake fluid, not DOT 3, and be damned careful with it... if you get it on the paintwork of your car it will ruin it!!!

Actually the problem finally showed its head.. drove the car earlier that day and all was great.. but a few hours later the entire clutch was flat. The throw seal (or something like that) went. I have my mechanic working on it now. But Im glad that it happened in my garage rather than in front of PetSmart! lol..

Such is life.. but it is what it is!

I find the easiest way to tell what it is, due to them coming in different colours that also change with age, is to try and mix the fluid with water. Oil as you know doesn't mix, brake / clutch fluid does. easy peasy...
think of changing the throw-out bearing with a hill engineering one, you can just replace the seals but if original will be getting old now and hills is much better quality. available from Daniel at ricambi.

Will you be going with the Hill?

Actually my Ferrari guy is doing the repair, not sure what parts he is going to be looking at yet. He is going to be jumping into it tomorrow. I would imagine that he is going to use the best that is available (even if I don't know what it is). He has more F-Car experience than even some of the master mechanics at the Ferrari Dealer here in my town. So I'm confident that he will do it right. Fortunately he is cheaper than the shop as well!

Finally for once, I get the best for less than the most expensive price! Its a nice change once in a while!

He is really good and fun to be around. He has my engine on the stand as I write. Hopefully it goes back in the car later today for pickup tomorrow. It has been there the past two weeks for it's major and I am having "with drawl symptoms". :)

Drawl symptoms? That is often cured by not parking next to old Ford pickups with gunracks or beat up Chevy Novas without a stitch of paint on the body but still has a flawlessly polished chrome air intake.

I should be picking it up tomorrow. Turned out that the clutch had lots of issues so I wound up just putting in a new one. That was a chunk of change I wasn't expecting this month, but such is life. If I wanted cheap, I would have gotten a Honda.

Women don't flock naked to you in a Honda. The 16yo snot rod rice burner civic drivers may think that they do.. but they don't! lol
