Hi all, I have a 360 with a sports exhaust (Larini). I like how an exhaust makes that 'popping' sound when you let go of the accelerator and unburned fuel goes through. You can here it here: http://youtu.be/k5EcyZ72Ihk However... I don't normally hear it inside. The microphone on he clip above was placed outside next to the exhaust. The only time I hear it is just after starting the car, in particular when I drive back from work in the afternoon, when I bring it to 4000 rev for the first time and let go. Then it really pops quite loudly.I guess due to the fact that there is a more rich fuel injection when the engine is cold. Otherwise I never hear it inside. Is there a way to have this permanent? I asked Larini and they proposed sport cats (not straight pipes)but also warned that the exhaust will be very loud. Already I sometimes have to be careful not to cross dB levels on track days...and I'm afraid that with those cats I will be taken off the track frequently. So is there an electronic way maybe? A friend said that you can program the ecu such that the fuel injection doesn't close completely when you let go of the accelerator. Does anyone know how?
Not sure from listening, but id have to guess that the car in the video has straight pipes the whole way..no pre-cats on the headers and no cats on the mid pipe...i'm sure youll not only hearing the popping noise, but probably see some flame if u did the same on your car too lol but your problem is being able to pass decibel levels at the track? chances are that you need to open up your exhaust more to get that "popping" noise you want but in turn, opening exhaust will def make you louder
Dammit...that sounds great! Reminds me of a Stebro can I had on an M3. Wife flat out refused to get into the car.
My car does it ALL the time and I have test pipes and tue straddle exhaust but still have the stock headers so it can happen even with precats
So...you want to artificially program a lean mixture, regardless of the effects to your engine, cats, exhaust, etc so that you can hear a louder popping sound... This is the first time I write a slightly sarcastic reply, but...
Here's your answer, and it won't harm your car. SoundRacer SRV8 Realistic SuperCar V8 Engine Sound Effects : Amazon.com : Automotive
No the car in the video is mine. I all sounds great but that's because the microphone is next to the exhaust. No straight pipes. Stock cats and stock exhaust pipes with valves. Only the muffler has been replaced by a Larini one. Normally there are no problems passing the decibel levels, but like you said, opening the exhaust more will probably give dB problems. 109 dB according to Larini if I would add the sport cats. Haha yes yes yes. Actually, not a lean mixture, but I was told that you can program the ECU not to close some fuel valve entirely when you let go of the accelerator. Don't know on the effects (apart from even more fuel consumption ) but it always strikes me how Maserati cars with stock sport exhaust do have it, while 360s with sport exhausts don't. Thanks. Not entiiiiirely what I was looking for....
Replacing the cats with test pipes will increase popping on overrun considerably, but also the noise level of the exhaust.
Sorry. I meant rich. I had a Maser QP with Larini exhaust and x-pipe who he'd snapped, crackled and popped a lot. The exhaust geometry is completely different (front engine, x pipes, etc). I enjoyed it because it was a characteristic of the exhaust system. You're trying to force this onto your F360's system.
Robin, I think your car is loud enough already Suzanne made an Iphone video of your 360 in the tunnel the other day...I couldn't stop smiling, it sounds so loud! I'll try to upload it. My 360 makes louder popping sounds by slightly tapping the accelerator after I've accelerated fast. Works quite well I must say
Thanks Mike. Looking forward to the video.., I tried this as well, tapping the accelerator, but it doesn't help much. Seems to work in your Tubi though, even if it's shortly. Ahhhhh....where are the days of carburetors ...
I love seeing videos of cars that spit fire out the exhaust and hearing them pop. But I don't like it on my own cars. I want them to startup, idle, and rev clean burning and with a consistent exhaust note. Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but transient bursts in the exhaust remind me of backfire and an engine that isn't running right. Sort of like how a loping idle sound from the exhaust sounds cool, but is also not a great sign for a proper tune.
You are absolutely right, Robin360. It is all down to he way the ECU is programmed, it lets some fuel go unburned and this is what causes that wonderful sound. It is truly intoxicating!

Haha. Good times Mike! But you can tell there's no popping sound. Well not enough to hear unless you're close to the exhaust.
interesting the stuff people want on their cars...to me popping is a engine that is out of tune and needs work. Yeah, on the race track it happens but on the street, if my 360 popped I would take it in and get it repaired, its embarassing to be seen in a car whose engine is so out of tune that it pops. luckily, its your car and to each his own.
I love burble on the overrun, there's nothing sexier on a car. Surprisingly, my little Abarth will snap, crackle, and pop pretty good when driven hard. Essentially being straight pipes beyond the cat will do that. Mark
That's right. I wasn't sure how to describe it (also I'm not an English native speaker) but 'sexy burble' sounds about right
ECU re- map is your best bet. You could play around with the exhaust valve timings. Mine does it when cold but also when the exhaust is very hot.
