My buddy owns the property next to the yard.
Have you tried putting the scope through the oil drain hole in the pan? That's how I eventually found the washer when I did the same thing a couple of years ago. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/348-355/308290-first-diy-30k-service-dropped-washer-cyl-head-need-help.html Also, if you do end up having to pull the oil pan, be careful to only use a VERY thin film of sealant when putting it back on. I've now had my second engine out adventure in two years due to excess sealant breaking loose in the pan and getting chewed up in the oil pump chain. I used a very small amount of Yamabond 4 when putting the pan back on.
If you don't mind my asking, what were the signs/symptoms of a broken off rtv sealant worm? Did you get engine damage due to oil starvation or did you just find pieces at oil change time?
I found pieces during an oil change. The motor internals looked fine once I everything apart but the oil pump screens were starting to clog up with all of the little pieces and it would have been a problem at some point as more and more of the worms got chewed up. I found it strange, that the sealant worms stuck for a number of years (at least 3 since I've had the car) and just decided to come loose sometime last year. In any case the story is in another thread here: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/348-355/393608-plastic-fragments-oil-what-they.html
Very good advise about using just the right amount of rtv. Ive seen some mechanics gobbing it on quite heavy when re-seating cam seal/valve covers... Very easy to put too much on as they form perfect oil-hole-sized interior worms as surfaces are torqued together.
I ordered some smaller magnetic tools, should be in within the next few days. I am trying some other suggestions that were posted on here by my brothers, so far no luck. But the fight isn't over yet... Will keep you posted
Update please on the washer quest? ( P.S. MRI super magnets would try to tear every piece of ferrous metal out of the engine)
I borrowed my buddies scope one last time. Slide it down into the oil p[assage, and like discovering the lost treasure there it was, 1 inch beyond where I had been using the flex magnet. Put the magnet in (almost out of shaft to grab) and there it was, my washer, in my hands once again. Thanks guys for the ideas... This Brotherhood is great
Excellent! I suspected you would find it if you looked long enough. I remember that feeling of relief seeing the washer just sitting there, waiting to be plucked out!
So everything is back together, just getting ready to start her up this week and I'm double checking my double checks. a question came up. is there supposed to be clearance between the belt and the belt follower? I left it just above the belt, but I watched a video where the ground away the backside of the follower to allow for more clearance, comments?
Finally back together, fired her up for the first time. After sorting out a few minor issues I think we're done. The sound at idle is completely different, we removed all of the emission, not sure if that would make a noticable change of if its just the computer relearning. Image Unavailable, Please Login
