New owners have the same questions and concerns as we all have in the past. Timing belts, Shields, Rattling, Tire sizes, Won't start when hot..it goes on and on.
A sticky thread should be created where these same old questions can be answered simply and concisely without the new owner starting another thread again and again.

    Why?

What would any new threads be about?
These cars are 14-24 years old. How many completely new things are going to come up?

Got to agree. Do we want a forum or just a searchable index? Through asking daft questions I've chatted with owners from the States, Europe, Australia and other parts of the far east. Surely that's half the reason for a forum - to get info, yes, but also to chat to other owners around the world. If not you may as well just read the workshop manual ....... ok, maybe not the workshop manual but some other book that actually has helpful info in it.

No disrespect to the OP at all but I always totally disagree with this view. The alternative is if you see a thread on a subject you don't want to read about, don't read it. Makes me chuckle when people open a thread and post on it simply to say it's a pointless thread :)

p.s. Have I just done that here...........

Agreed. Such sticky posts would have helped me when I first bought mine. Even if they know to search old posts first, the issues still may not be answered by older posts as they tend to be convoluted by side chatter. I simple tutorial of FAQ would definitely help.

There are plenty of "reference" threads for that kind of information.
I think this website would die a quick death if no one was allowed to ask questions that hadn't been asked before.

There are always new and interesting answers to old questions...

Guys, not being arumentative, genuinely trying to make a point. I'm a relatively new owner (couple of years) but there's very few things that have happened to my car that I could not simly look up between here, ***********, CS to name a few. On Fchat we have a pretty thriving community, do you really want to see that disappear and be replaced by an index of static, historical threads?

Take shields for an example, we've been having a pointless but lively little debate about the pros and cons. No one's making anyone read it who doesn't want to. It's been talked about numerous times before but could you point me to the thread describing the history behind the symbol back to when it was on Alfas rather than Ferraris? You may not be interested, who knows the OP may be. Had he just searched previous threads perhaps he wouldn't have come across this (admittedly fairly useless) peice of info. Got lambasted for mentioning LdM's comments not long back, but was acually a look at the feasability of the fabled drag race against a GTI which, to my knowledge had never actually been looked at. Still got slated for bringing it up.

Guess what I'm saying is any idiot can use a search feature (trust me, I know) but got to know other owners who I've met up with outside cyberworld and traded items and ideas with guys all over the world. Wouldn't have done if everyone had just looked back to a thread from 2004 to answer whatever question they had.

If people want to just search, they will. I know, 6 Ferrari mechanics, indies and mechs in main dealers, and I'm sure most of us do. Any of us could just ask our local mech for the 'book' answer. Why not just exercise your right not to read threads you don't want to read and let the newbies have the fun of discussing all the things you did years back rather than just reading your discussions? What's the harm in that?

    Hell Yeah

There should be an FAQ STICKY (with functioning Hyperlinks!!!) for all major issues for this damn car.

My 355 has presented more problems than all my other cars combined...

I'm a newbe....I have been a lurker for a long time before a bought my 348, but how can I feel that I belong to the Brotherhood if I don't dare to ask questions? I can use the "search button" but that's not a "human beeing" explaing what to do with my problem.
But I can tell you one thing, I'll never ask if a cam belt can be done w/o engine out.....

Using google search to search FChat works better than the search function.

    This syntax works....

I don't mind repetitive questions. Sometimes the information in the old threads is out of date. If you search for info on 355 headers you'll find some of the info that was correct when a thread was written has changed. New prodcuts become available.

I do agree with that. That definitely is an improvement over other sites, where you can't post anything for fear of getting banned because "it was in a sticky" or "use the f'ing search already"... when many times the existing stickies / faq's are not the ultimate guides that their authors think they are.

    Carry on then!

Why do people get so bent out of shape on this topic?

If you don't want to respond to a new users questions, then don't. I've gotten great help from folks here and try to do my part.

It's a discussion forum, so we discuss.

Thanks man, geez I was just trying to help with a an idea to help new 348/355 owners with the most common problems we all have faced in the past. A FAQ sticky would save a lot of time and effort in doing multiple searches that may be dated or not found on this search engine,...very frustrating. You always have the option to search to your hearts content. The FAQ sticky of course could be constantly updated with any new information at any time.

    Lol

But we've got one of those for the 355 and one for the 348 (which was obviously started first, kind of goes without saying......), just going to take a while to poulate them.

I think I slightly misunderstood your meaning when you said about new members starting the same old threads "again and again" and saying it goes "on and on" - just kind of sounds like you're fed up with cam belt threads (just remind me is that 3 years or milage or.......).....:)

I was taking the mickey earlier on by putting "Questions" into the search engine but I pretty much guarantee if I put "cambelt" - search title only - in I'm going to be bombarded with info. But where's the fun in that? Part of the reason for posting up as a new thread is that you sort of get to know who knows what they're talking about on here and who doesn't (fall well and truly into the second catagory) so when you ask you can kind of filter out the well meaning stuff and get down to reading the stuff from the guys you're learning to trust. On a historical thread that's not always easy to do.

Good question. Surely everything about these cars has been discussed on this forum, so we could stop chatting and just search... but what fun would that be?

As a complete newbie to Fchat, I have no doubt I'm going to ask questions that have been discussed 100 times already. I think it's common courtesy to do some research and educate yourself before piping up - after all, you can learn a LOT from just reading previous discussion threads; however, there's no substitute for interaction - you don't get that from an 8 year old thread... and after all, this is a forum.

Kicking off a search for a 355, I've found most of the folks here extremely welcoming, friendly, and best of all willing to talk about topics that are "old hat" for most existing owners. I think sticky threads that are easy to find and search are extremely useful - it helps people like me come up to speed quickly. But I'm awfully glad there have been some great folks here willing to reach out and share their experience, discuss topics with me directly, and undoubtedly do it for the umpteenth time. I look forward to returning the favor to others down the road with a smile on my face!

Dennis, although this is a great idea, I believe that people will still start new threads asking their questions as they may not see the FAQ sticky.

Perhaps we can start the FAQ sticky regardless, then when someone starts a new thread we can simply refer them to that FAQ sticky.

No, the new owner doesn't know why his car won't start when hot or what that rattling noise is, etc. he just wants to know what's wrong, then he can address how to fix the problem. Besides many owners are not mechanically inclined or even have the tools needed. If only 'The Stooges' were close to everyone:)
