The 150, 200 and 250 four cylinder engines also came with mousetrap springs. I think the Birdcage also came that way but don't quote me on that. They are very stable in term of harmonics but don't over rev the engines or you are really asking for trouble with valves touching the piston, even if it is a little over the rev limit.

In my case it is not the valve spring type used that impresses me with this single overhead cam cylinder head it is the hemispherical combustion chamber, single overhead cam and spark plug in the centre (or close). The spark plug position is usually only possible by twin overhead cams.

The method of controlling the (I think) exhaust valves is very advanced and clever and this engine gets very close to ALL the advantages of a twin overhead cam without the complexity, and in particular easy valve clearance adjustment.

Lovely bit of engineering. Heck mechanics back in the 1950's would have found this incredibly out there!

    Pete,

all the 50s engines from Maserati are technically advanceed and -as Eliott clearly pointed out- fragile. Ferrari engines were more simple - but very often more reliable. But drive a Ferrari-4-cyl.- car and then jump into a 200S or T61 and you feel that Enzo`s 4-pot engines are were never really good.

But a race driver does not ask for technical sophistication - but loves reliability...

It is the intake valves that are activated across the head, the cam is on the exhaust side.

Somewhat ironically this elegant design is the simplification of a twin-cam, non-demountable-head competition engine for easier maintenance and low octane. The spark plug position and combustion chamber shape apparently remained as legacies.

Two years after the '47 introduction, the factory started installing triple carbs upon request (like Ferrari's export vs. inter option) to regain performance. I don't know whether the compression ratio was changed, but at least one owner of a triple-carb version reported difficulty with the pump gas available at that time for non-military use.

don`t think so! It is #2122 and it seems to me that it was in 1956 (and not in `55).

That is regrettably #093. It was discussed earlier in this thread at posts 589 to 599. A "Kalifornia Kustom" A6 1500 . . .

    Hi Walter
I have a car that was ordered from Pininfarina in 1950 and delivered in 1951 to Signor Luigi Bressani. I would like to find out anything about Signor Bressani

Thanks very much for posting, although it is sad to see apparent confirmation of the death of #085.

This is really just the front crossmember, only a fragment of the chassis. The remainder does not even match the factory blueprint shown on the floor beside it. The configuration and numbering style of the crossmember appear to be correct.

The car depicted in the listing is #067 in a still from the movie "Domenica d'Agosto", I believe. #085 is shown here.

I'd be interested to hear what price this dealer would demand for a whole car.

Yes I'd imagine it'd be a multi-million dollar car if all the parts were to be priced that way!
Sad to see the beautiful car reduced to a rusty piece of iron and a few documents.

Thanks very much for posting. This car was restored with many incorrect details in California during the 1990s, then went to a Japanese owner. It will be very interesting to see the catalog description.
