The car looks great, Paul in Grigio Argento. My father owned 6199 which was the same colour with burgundy interior. That car is now red. Good luck with the sale. I'm sure you won't have it much longer. Very desirable spec with 5 speed gearbox.

Totally agree about XWXs but it came with 5 new Borranis shod with 5 new Pirellis.......There is absolutely no substitute to XWx's on any of these older Ferrari. They just look Right....

That's one of the Anthony Moody 330's right Paul? He bought a few of them from Gullwing, ebay, Forza Motorsports in Ct. etc. as investments, all under $100,000 and now wants close to $200,000 for them. That's an observation by the way and not necessarily the whole story :)

Ex Moody..... and in fairness to him he then spent approx $70,000 on this car before I received it and had it repainted. You insinuate that he tried to make a profit from his purchase which I'm beginning to understand is frowned upon in this forum.......... In reality 330's are AM's love and hobby and thank God there are buyers like him out there as many of these less popular models would still be non running wrecks.

I'm not in any way meaning to disparage you Paul or the 330 you are selling or even what you are asking for it. I guess I was commenting more on the flipper aspect of buying a few 330's without inspecting them, holding them for a short time, doing some work on them, then selling them off. Maybe another car, 6135, is a case in point.

AM still owns 6135GT but I have watched its restoration with both admiration and interest. What you refer to as ........doing some work on them.........has resulted in a full restoration that I would estimate has cost him between $100,000-120,000. AM's ownership was never intended to be any longer than it took to restore the car and then market which he is presently doing. It will then return to the Ferrari community and hopefully be appreciated by future owners. I'm not quite sure what the.......flipper aspect......infers but your tone certainly appears derogatory. Many enthusiasts of AM's financial calibre wouldn't look twice at a 330 believing them to be vastly inferior to other tipo. Rather than try to pour scorn on his efforts I think he should be lauded for undertaking a project that was guaranteed to show a financial loss from the start.

    Well said Paul.

I've been mad for cars and bikes since the late 50's when at the age of seven someone brought me a copy of Road & Track that featured a T-35 Bug while I was in the hospital awaiting an appendectomy. Even more-so than architecture, I think motor vehicles are a perfect expression of what man can do at his best; combining Technology and Art.

Given the nature of this thread, I accept that I have an obvious bias when I say that I'm very happy to see the early 330s finally approaching values that encourage their restoration. Granted they aren't as sexy as Lussos or GTCs, but I think that in their way they better represent the "gentleman's express" of the early sixties that I remember.
These are beautiful, hand built, useful, reliable sports cars that reflect the personality of the man who built them. By any reasonable standard, these cars are rare gems that deserve to be cherished in their own right.
    They are our history.

I've never understood the argument around "flipping" colletor cars.
Some may perceive the value differently than me based on all sorts of criteria; from aesthetics to personal history. In the end a car is worth what someone will pay for it.
If you diagree, don't buy it. If you can't afford it, that doesn't make its value less.

    Rant complete

As expected, the inner rockers had deteriorated a fair bit and the rear arches were pretty marginal.
The good news is the car is now down to bare metal and there is no indication of any accident damage (beyond the driver’s door already mentioned) or further corrosion.
New outer and inner rear arches have been fabbed and installed and new galvanized rockers are being made ready.
It’s always a bit frightening at this stage!

Front headlight bezels have returned from being re-plated; really turned out well.

I’m still looking for information on the origin of the passenger side window winding mechanism.

Next up: moving forward with bodywork

    mostly photos this time.
A bit of overlap from my last post
I’m a bit behind on posting as I have photos in THREE cameras and haven’t had the time to put them all in proper sequence.
    .
Inner and outer rockers were removed and replaced with galvanized.
Accident damage to driver’s door can be seen mid-repair in shots of the rockers.
Both rear arches cut out and replaced.
Body has been prepped with very little filler and primed in white then black for block sanding.
This will be repeated until it’s deemed ready for paint.

Next up: a new silver coat

Photos: a series of shots of rockers
Three of the inner and outer rear arch & repair
Looking good in rat rod black…

here's a quick up date on bodywork.

    almost there!
Lots of nigglely issues (aren't there always).
Driver's door needed to be removed and have hinge pins replaced.
Getting the body line "just right" has been a challenge.
The shape is much more subtle than one might think at first glance.
Car is now on its fourth level of light/dark prime and sand.

Oddly, finding a paint & mixing code for my car has been difficult; so much so that I intend to start a seperate thread on "vintage" paint.

My car was originally "grigio argento" of which there are three...
With much help from Leigh at Redline, Paul Baber, Brian Hoyt, & others, I now have the info needed to buy the proper paint.

Hopefully, car and paint will meet shortly.

prep for paint is taking a bit longer than expected as I'm not yet convinced it's quite right and the bodyshop has booked in another car for the next two weeks, so I have moved the car offsite rather than rush to paint.
    - not much point in getting it "almost right"

While you wait for more progress, here's a couple of quick shots from just beforehand.

no news on the car until early 2013 as working around the holiday schedules of all those involved is a non-starter.
until then best wishes to all who have visited here.

I know this thread is about your heroic efforts in the restoration of a 4HL car, but seeing your resto of the TR4 brought me some great memories. I too, had a red TR4 when I was a med student and early in my residency. Great car and fun to drive, tho' it took so long to erect the top that, in a down pour, it was best to put on the tonneau and get soaked. Keep up the good fight and congrats! s

Well, after a short break over Christmas and New Years, the car has moved from the bodyshop to a specialty paint shop for final prep and paint as of March 5.

She still needs about another 2 weeks for priming and blocking, pulling the glass, removing the doors, & other a$$orted ;)

For anyone who wonders why it costs what it does to do this sort of thing properly; new rubber for the glass and various openings will probably run north of $3K...

Attached are some photos from this weekend's visit to go over details of what remains to be done.

in the backround of one; sorting through the trim

We are up and rolling again!
Bianca received her new paint on Monday followed by three clear coats.

The doors were removed to prepare and paint the jambs and then re-hung for painting, but still require adjustment for final fit.

After much discussion the decision was made to remove the rear glass but paint with the windshield in place. The car has never shown any sign of leaks, the window seal is still pliable, and the risk of breaking a very expensive piece of 50 year old laminated glass was deemed too great for the minimal benefit.
A broken windshield would have meant at least $4000; taking in the price of the glass, seal, duties, install, & taxes. I feel there are other areas of the car that can better use those funds. The rear glass was put back today, and the car will receive an initial polishing on Monday. There's still a ways to go on the body; plating, refitting trim, fitting new door and trunk seals, tweaking body gaps & the ever-lurking surprises.

I apologize for the quality of the photos attached.
There wasn't a lot of room around the car to get any really decent long shots.
Hopefully I'll have better by the end of next week.

    cheers

It's been quite awhile since I posted the photos of my freshly painted Bianca Neve.

Unfortunately, the bad news is upon having reasonable space around the car to have a good detailed look I decided the car wasn't up to standard and I decided to have the paint re-done. The line along the side just wasn't "crisp" enough.
Somewhere between final prep and paint booth someone got a bit too enthusiastic with the block sanding ...

The shop owner wasn't really pleased with the result either and agreed to correct it at their cost; but it's thrown the schedule out the door...
    -shocking, I know!

The car has now re-emerged and I think it looks terrific.

    Here are some quick photos.
I'll post more in a day or so once I have a chance to reformat them.

    - ciao
