Its not really a race in the normal sense. They should just let them have nice Karts and let them pass sometimes :)

Id rather see Turkey back on the schedule than see the pomp and lack of actual racing that is Monaco. Its nostalgia and if there is no safety car its a great way to pass away a boring rainy day watching the tele. Monaco is not a race. Its the show that F1 talks about. The races begin again in Canada. That one is usually worth your time.

    F1 has out grown F1....

It's not racing anymore. It's about conserving tires and interpreting the rules a different way from others. It's so boring now.

I can't recall which race it was but pitting after 5 laps is totally silly!

I say bring back 2 tire manufacturers and in season testing.

Alonso vs Michael (2006) was amazing.

They're trying too hard to make it interesting and I think they're shooting themselves in the foot with that.

Back in 2006 there were strategic pitstops. There was little racing during the race. All they did was wait for the other guy to pit and hope their strategy enabled them to stay out longer. Put in a few quick laps and hope to leap frog the other guy ... no passing at all.

F1, actually all racing, has always involved strategy ... even when tyres lasted the whole race long, you had to look after them, etc.

LOL: Bring back 2 tire manufacturers.

Pirrelli has not renewed and wants out unless things are changed. Before they get two makers maybe they should try to find ONE.

Personally, I like one manufacturer. If tire maker A has better tires than B, A always wins no matter how crappy a car or driver. Giving everyone the same tires forces the engineers and drivers to make up speed elsewhere.

One of the cornerstones of Vizsla's election campaign is to install/restore some gravel traps! ;)

Not many have them anymore though; Certainly the Tilke-domes I was referring too are all tarmac, only the "classic" tracks are still gravel. Problem is, it's been shown time & time again that tarmac is *much* safer. I don't much like these huge parking lots, but I think we've got to accept it. :(

My issue (along with many others, you included of course! ;)) is they're not "punished" in any way for, basically, designing their own track layout.... Put two wheels off? No problem! Damn, put the whole thing outside the white lines and you're still in the clear! Can't do that at Monaco!.....

I certainly don't want crashes. But I do enjoy the "no errors" nature of Monaco.

Beg to differ! Monaco's *always* been a procession. It is what it is.

    Cheers,
    Ian

+1 Helps to keep the field level at the least.

I do think they may be getting close to agreeing *limited* in season testing; There's no way they're going back to unlimited testing with 2-3 dedicated test teams, but seems they've recognized that no testing (unless you're Merc ;)) is not the way to go either.

Again, run on Monday/Tuesday after (some of) the races seems to make too much sense.

    Cheers,
    Ian

Why does this thread have to be posted after every Monaco GP?

F1 outgrew Monaco in about 1970. Doesn't mean it should be taken off the calendar. There are 19 other races where you can watch the drivers DRS-pass at will. Leave it be, it's the ultimate test of the drivers.

Whats wrong with the turbo era of the 80's? it was a super facinating era, great racing, and really fast cars!!! great drivers ( some of the best ever -Prost, Lauda, Senna, Piquet, Mansell, etc.... its what made F-1 THE racing sport.

I for one miss the wide cars, big tires, huge wings, and unlimited power! it makes todays cars look like dinky toys.

To me the ultimate year for F-1 1990. V-12, V-10, W-12, V-8's from Ford, Judd, Yamaha, Each car looked different, sounded different and they were so impressive with all the sparks and wide tires.. they even smelled different - toulouene makes a great smell!

As for Monaco - its F-1!

Nothing, but I just don't need to read about it in every thread from Vinny Bourne.

Nah, the golden age was the late thirties. Huge power, high tech, no grip, long distances.
    And real politics.

I agree with Vizsla and so likely would Senna.

I've "used" a gravel trap in a big way once and if it had been Tarmac I would not be typing this, plus it enables exaggeration of racing lines as with any race driver, you give them an extra inch and they will take 10.

I cannot believe so many don't see the spectacle and drama, and VARIATION that is Monaco. As I said in a previous post in this thread, and was ignored, you design the cars to suit the track. You do NOT design the track to suit the cars. America did this with one of their series and the logical final track design is ovals ... no flipping thanks.

Cars should be designed to suit the roads and race cars built to suit the track but Monaco is so atypical a track that the cars have to be modified just to make it around.
I love Monaco for the anachronism it is. For its unforgiving nature. For the finger it gives the rest of the sport.
But it is so atypical that it shouldnt be, and doesn't need to be, a points race.

I don't think that anyone has offered a explaination as to why it should.

I can't see why it shouldn't be a points race. Most races are won by the guy on pole, that is why we have the current qualifying processes.

There is nothing wrong with a race that rewards a 100% no mistake weekend, ie. pole and perfect race.

Should stay and should be a points race, otherwise we are saying drivers need to be able to make mistakes in the premier series!

That's one, but only one, aspect that makes Monaco unique.

As for winning from the pole I haven't run any numbers but would be amazed if Monaco isn't a statistical outlier there.

I don't think that its a huge issue (there being so many more gross inequities in F1) but Monaco is a fantasyland and shouldn't be sullied by such plebeian concerns as points.
    ;)

Both types of run off areas are dangerous when travelling at high speed. ie Senna Imola - Berger - Imola. Schumacher - Silverstone. The list is endless really if you look back. I witnessed Gilles Villeneuve at Monaco many years ago using the Armco at St Devote to great effect, he would just kiss the barrier on the exit to straighten the car for the push up the hill. Incredible to watch a driver with such precision lap after lap. However the best event was the Renault clio race beforehand. Now those guys knew how to race hard.

You race you take your chance. The fact is Monaco might be a spectacle and hugely entertaining but when you have vastly different tracks throughout the world it is virtually impossible to design the cars to suit various tracks, likewise adapting circuits to suit the cars. Most take a pragmatic view and design their cars for a particular type of track anyway.

Never said it wasn't a good track just that a modern F1 car is strangled around it. The change of direction is hugely impressive and awesome to watch but I am afraid its run its course. Koybyashi doing a dohnut at rascasse was the only good thing in recent years.

Actually I think at Monaco you get to see the real performance of a F-1 car vis a vis normal cars - exotic cars... nothing looks fast on a track with lots of room... but bring it to a city street... it looks and is amazing.

the thing is F-1 has been dumbed down for mass appeal... and its NEVER been about mass appeal. its always been about ( till recently - past 10 yrs. ) best drivers, best cars, latest and greatest technology - racing around the world.... Monaco deserves a place in F-1 simply becuase its one of the oldest continous tracks in existance, and the challenge is still greater than anywhere else. It's the rules of F-1 that have strangled F-1 not Monaco.

What is more impressive - 230MPH on the front straight at Monza or 0-150 - 0 in 10 sec at Monaco? I vote the latter. All the other stuff is just a bow that you can tie up the GP weekend with.

Maybe at a track like Monaco they should do something extreme like require narrower tires or banning carbon-fiber brakes. But it should remain on the schedule, and as a points race.
