In my opinion they both left because they were tired of spending mega $$$ with little to show for it and used the recession as a convenient excuse to bail.

2009 must have been hard to watch as a Honda exec...

I'll grant that had they been winning a stronger case might have been made internally against leaving but the descision would have likely been the same.
