Here are more cars waiting for the convoy, including the other two Teslas, a Maserati Biturbo and a yellow Murcielago SV that was probably the most "badass" car there! I don't recall seeing any kids riding in the Atom; perhaps they thought it was a bit too extreme.

We had been told to expect an Alpharetta P.D. police escort as far as GA-400; in fact the police escorted us all the way up 400 to GA-53! Up front, at least, it meant a fairly even pace (albeit rather slow up to about McFarland Pkwy) and we made it nonstop to the turnoff at about 55 mph average.

I kept my camera on my seat and took a few "grab shots" when it seemed safe to do so. I was concentrating on the 10 cars in front of me (I could see the police cruiser leading the line most of the time) and have no idea how the long line behind me coped. You may recognize the blue Elise in front of me.

When we got to the track, the AMP staff did an exceedingly good job of getting everyone situated quite quickly, in lines that were far enough apart that anyone could pull out and pass cars in front of them that weren't going out. I got a good shot of the Gatorrari nicely centered and then went upstairs on the clubhouse deck to shoot the entire field, doing the same from the stairs behind the scoring tower a bit later. Just think of what the total value of that field of cars must be worth!

Of course, there were a few cars we had not seen at FMoA, including George's Merak and Rick's Bentley. There was also a GT40 replica with an impressive set of exhaust pipes. The Ford GT and Ariel Atom in the pit lane were not part of the event, but I thought it was appropriate that the Atom was black and yellow; it does rather resemble a Yellow Jacket! And the costumed characters from Children's Healthcare of Atlanta seemed to be engaging in their own driving fantasy while they entertained the kids.

Will addressed the gathering from the upper deck, accompanied by some wives that a lot of us know. The Tesla revealed a trunk up front, and another in the back - look, ma, no engine! (This would make a good scenario for a "candid camera" setup.)

Once the actual rides began, things went on hot and heavy, leaving large gaps in the parking field. When I came back from my first time on track, I found a kindred spirit to park next to. Just think, another red & tan 328 GTS with a Gator license tag! Later, when I went out for the second time (in what would be the last group - with kids - of the day), I was right behind him, and you can see the third red & tan 328 pulling in from the left. With Tom's black 328 also in attendance, I think that, for a change, we outnumbered both the 308s and 348s.

The Viper driver had a radio-controlled quadrotor in his trunk that he demonstrated later. And I was able to get a rare shot of the cousins Campbell together. Nice going, guys!

Lunch under the big tent consisted of flatbread sandwiches with chips and a beverage for all participants. Then came the "pay to play" segment, where people who wanted to do hot laps on the track could pay for them (requested in advance) with the money going to the cause. I found both Toms (Spiro and Cosgrove) getting ready to go, and then a chance shot of both negotiating turn 6! So, how was it out there, guys?

By then, I was ready to depart, and I enjoyed traveling west on GA-53 to GA-515, and then south the full length of I-575 back to Marietta, in blissfully light traffic. I actually got home early enough to go into work for a couple hours of overtime! A full day, but a fruitful one. I'm looking forward to "Rides to Remember" 2014.

Lets just say that following David's Cali spider deep into turn 1 is NOT a great idea with stock brakes. my tires actually were great, only one wobble in turn 6.... I have to remind my self that my car is 25 yrs. old....

About 12 years ago I bought my first set of track tires. Went all out too, had them shaved, heat cycled and even bought new wheels. The difference was more than I can describe. "Night and day" doesn't even cut it. It actually transforms the car. I spend the next decade ONLY tracking on those things. They were not cheap and only lasted about 3 events at places like Barbers - one at TigPrix - but worth every penny.

This past weekend was my fist time back on street rubber. Wow.
