355 Heater Problem

I wonder if anyone has any expeience with the following.
.
Yesterday i noticed stem coming from the luggage compartment.
I removed the lining to find that the heater water pump (i think that is its name) was leaking from the plastic base..
This is number 6 in the parts diagram in this thread
Has anyone got an idea if there is an easy mod to fix this..?
Or if there is another manufacturer that sells this part like the heater valve (number 8) already mentioned in this thread...

I too am trying to source the motor. I have the part numbers listed but can't seem to find one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That pump is a recirculation pump. It assists the main water pump. Since the coolant has to go all the way to the front of the car. This P.O.S. from Bosch is a piece of crap. The O-ring goes bad. Of course Bosch uses an O-ring that is IMPOSSIBLE to find and replace. I actually found a VW pump that is almost identical. The input & output ports are a tiny bit larger in outer diameter. The hoses will fit, trust me. And the electrical connection is different. It's no biggie. It's just a basic 12VDC motor. Two wires. One +, & one -. Splice my friend. Make it work. It cost me like 50 bucks. I would have to take a look in there to get the exact part number. I don't understand why Ferrari has to rape it's customers with insane prices for little things? I hate the smell of anti-freeze in the morning!

I had the same problem. Got me that SAAB stepper motor and hacksawed the shaft to the right length. Works just fine. It's the exact same part Ferrari uses. If you look real close at the Ferrari motor you can see it was cut. Then they jack up the price to some insane amount. With Ferrari it's a Love hate relationship.

It appears there are 2 types of water heater pumps..
Early model and late.. Separated by the assembly line number of 31369
(thankd daniel at Ricambi)

My car is a 96 5.2 motronic and therefore the early type..
Ricambi sells both types..

I dont know what model your car is Mike nor its assembly number, but in regards to the VW pump is there any such distinction into early and late model pumps..

Why do they have 2 types of pumps and why arent they interchangeable between the 2 models..

Oh and Mike have you found the VW part number ?

I'm told that the Saab part has been discontinued and no longer available. I haven't sourced the Bosch or GM part. Any suggestions?

I have same problem..... Search part number on
Saabpartscheap.com - around $100 for the part, I have not confirmed yet whether it is original bosch part, I'm not too concerned given that it is a only a climate motor! I'll post how I make out with mine.

I found one at a Saab auto salvage yard. They are sending me the motor for $45 plus $15 for shipping. I'll see if it works and let you know.

 

So, couldn't find the motor anywhere! Finally got a response from a Saab/Volvo salvage yard. They sent me the motor yesterday. I put it in and,PERFECT! had to trim the shaft off but no big deal at all. Total cost of the fix..........................................$45!

Thanks for all I've learned on this thread already. I have a '95 F355B and it isn't putting out any heat. A/C works great, but no warm air. Heading into winter I'd like to fix it (myself if I can).

Have taken out the liner and done the test you suggest where I turn the temperature knob on the control panel all the way from coldest to full heat setting. I did this with all the permutations of other knob positions to eliminate some sort of fluke logic loop: tried with the fan blowing at speed 1-4, all vent positions from defrost to auto, and stop button & recirc each popped up as well as pressed in. In none of the scenarios did the arm on the stepper motor move at all (it's stuck somewhere in the middle of its range).

So - with this info, am I safe to diagnose the problem as a faulty motor and replace that part, or are there further checks that I should do? Car's going in to see my (good, trusted, private ferrari specialist) mechanic so if I can't figure out what to do on my own, I'll ask him to have a look but would prefer to do this kind of non-engine work myself.

Also - is there a work-around to lock the system into full-heat mode? Given that I won't see OAT above 15 deg C for the next 7-8 months, probably a safe bet that I can do without AC over the winter..

I'd appreciate any info you can provide!

Hi, lift your bonnet, near side removable panel over fuses- take off, then unscrew the four fixings that hold the thin black metal frame around your air-intake (which is directly under your little air scoop, top of bonnet near windscreen) All you're doing is taking off what is holding the black lining in position! Carefully pull off the thick black rubber trim from just above light pod to centre of windscreen, this should then let you gently lift up the black lining starting near your door hinge, you'll then see under there what you see on item 5 on this thread, best of luck, I've had to do this myself several times! John.

What if no heat?

 

Reviving this thread. My fan control and vent controls work fine, no problems there. But, regardless of them control, I get hot heat...all the time. I have checked all fuses with the exception of the "hidden" one and they are fine. I examined the stepper motor and valve while moving the temp control from each extreme, pausing for a minute. No movement. Unplugged power and stuck a test light probe in the white wire, and grounded the light. When I now move the temp control from each extreme position, and wait, I see the test light illuminate for several seconds, then go out. Would that be considered normal operation?

I am trying to determine if I need a new stepper motor. If so, I know this will be hell to source, as they are not made by Bosch anymore, at least using the Bosch number and Saab number. Another Fchatter claimed there is a BMW that uses the same part (in the interchangeable parts thread) and I ran the number and a few BMW dealers have the part for $351 plus shipping. But I have not had anyone confirm it is the same part....

 

Went ahead and swapped out the stepper motor...found one for $50 used at a local Saab wrecking yard. After removing the assembly, shortening the shaft and installing, it all works normally again. Pain in the ass job, but done. You will need a pair of plastic line clamps to pinch off the hoses so you don't have a gusher of coolant coming out during the removal of the assembly. $12 at the local Harbor Freight for a set of three or four.

FYI, the hose clamp on the back side is a single use type and had to be cut off (used Dremel tool with cut off wheel). I replaced with the normal type, as used on the front side.

 

There is an important sub part number to this item, I just learned today. There is a number in a circle "944" after the main part number Bosch part #0 390 721 006

It is important you get the one with the "944", if you get the one with "917" the operation is reversed, and it won't work! I got mine from a Saab breaker parts dealer and he had both. I got lucky the first time, and it worked perfectly. Today, I was helping a friend fix his, and got one with "917" on it, and it worked in reverse. We called the Saab specialist and he admitted there are different versions and he was at a loss to know which was which, but when we checked my car, my old broken one, and the one we removed off my friends car, all had "944" after Bosch part #0 390 721 006.

I had the same problem and found a used SAAB part on eBay. However before fitting it i tested the SAAB motor with a 12V supply to see if it worked ok. It turned as it should and when the polarity was reversed it turned the other way. Before taking off my old motor i thought i'd test test it on the car in the same way and guess what? It worked! It had been stuck half way and no amount of adjustment on the control panel would move it but after cycling back to the shut position the correct movement was restored and it worked as it should.

I had a battery failure on the car and was wondering if this caused the motor to stick in a half closed position? It just needed reset and i believe many other owners have had the same issues and have unnecessarily replaced a perfectly good motor. So please test it by connecting a 12V supply to the 1st and 4th terminals to see if this resets it before replacing.

I have not the same problem, but a similar one.

There is a valve controlled by number 19 in this drawing from 'no doubt' his post.
This one controls if air comes from the outside of the car, or inside the car, if you push the button.
The problem is there is a constant ticking noise coming from this valve.

After looking further into the issue I found that the axe is broken that is connect from the valve to the little motor (19).

My question is, if there are any replacements available, or known issues like these. Fixing it with glue will not hold it I think, the valve is to heavy.

 

I have an identical problem in that my heater has started blowing just cold air when on (no hot even with the highest hot air setting).

I've sourced a second hand Bosch control valve from a Saab parts specialist but can anyone help with a part number for the VW black plastic valve mentioned in this thread?

Or at least identify the year/model of VW?

Since my F355 is now 18yrs old I figure its worth changing both parts whilst I have the bonnet interior disassembled!

VW Part number is #171 819 809e it costs about $15
