Where to find original radio or...

a mid-80s tape deck that works? I will then use something like this to play songs via bluetooth from my iPod. How cool is that?

If you're looking for a Blaupunkt, you see from time to time on E-bay Germany adds for high-end cassette decks already fitted with an I-pod connection, like this one (I have no affilation with the seller, and zero interest in the sale).

The 308 did not come with a radio. There was no factory radio. Radios were dealer installed, after market units.

 

Did not know that, so the factory just made a spot for a radio and each dealer would install what ever the customer wanted or what was appropriate for their location? My memory of what was popular in the mid-80s is Sony, Nakamichi, Harmam-Kardon, and Blaupunkt.

This is an example of what could be done with an E-Pod entry on a type of radio from this period, as an illustration.
That exact one, the Bremen SQR 46, would be period correct from 1986 to 1988, so for the 328; and should we want to really nitpick, only for a german market car as it has an automatic research fonction for some road information (the "SQR" designation).
Its immediate predecessor, the Bremen SQR 45, was sold from 1984 to 1985, so would be correct for a late QV.

It depend on what was done on any specific market; as as Johnk's answer suggests, there is some research to be done here before.

Should you really want to be period-correct with it, you must first check for what was done with those cars on the market of origin. If you've got an American market car, what I have learned here is that the cars came in the states without a radio, but where fitted by the dealerships usually.

In France the cars also came to the importer without radio, but as the french historic importer, Ch.Pozzi, was racing usually sponsored by Pioneer, so most french cars were fitted directly by the importer with a Pioneer tape deck as a counterpart of the sponsorship deal; those Pioneers has a small cavallino badge incrusted in the façade.
But, as always, there are exceptions: I know of at least one french 308 QV with a Blaupunkt from new, and two or three 328s without any radio at all when delivered.

I seem to recall that most american 308 that were fitted with a radio had Blaupunkts; if you are a stickler for absolute authenticity, then it would be useful to know exactly which type, depending on your car's year, and then begin your search.
Should it indeed be for a Blaupunkt, then the search should not be too difficult, as these were built in large numbers, as fitted to many different high-end cars (Porsches, etc...)

(Finding a period-correct Pioneer for a french car would be entirely another matter, as it must have that small cavallino badge...)

The Pioneer KEH-4060B of my '89 328 GTB...its is period-correct and original (and works!)
The pic is not very good, but the small cavallino badge embedded on the façade of all Pioneer tape decks fitted on french-market Ferraris by the importer, Ch. Pozzi, can be seen.
The french GTSs of the period usually had the "upgraded" KEH-5060B.

My car is a Swiss car that was imported and partially Federalized, so I'm sure an 80 something US radio was fitted at that time. I'd be happy with a period correct radio that can play music from my iPod as that would fit my resto-mod theme as it were. She will look stock from the outside but very modern underneath.

What model/year is it?
If it is swiss, it may have arrived in the United States already equipped with a radio; and if so, being a swiss-market car, a Blaupunkt would be a good bet.

I'm not 100% sure, but to me, the Blaupunkt SQR 45 would be a strong candidate for a 1985 swiss market car...

I couldn't find a single review on line that said the Bluetooth device actually works to stream music. Everyone says it only pairs in headset mode, not A2DP. So it can't play music or stream from the internet. You can hear phone calls but can't talk since there is no microphone.

But it seems like such a good idea.

Also, 1980's car audio = Alpine!

 

My '83 US car was originally delivered with a Blaupunkt, which is still installed. All of the documentation/manuals are with the owner's books. I forget the model... I would run out and check, but the forecast was for thunderstorms today so I didn't drive it to work. Also, all of this "US Open" traffic is difficult this week...

 

Yes, forgot all about Alpine which is crazy considering I installed car audio back then, but if you bought it at a truck stop it was an Alfine. LOL

A Euro radio will not tune to US freqs will it?

 

I'm not sure, but I guess not; what I seem to understand from Blaupunkt way of designating its products is that the last group of letters indicate the market (and wave frequencies) for which the unit is intended, "SQR" being typical to the German market, with a special guidance frequency for automobiles.
There must be another "Bremen 46" for other markets, but I am not that proeficient to know it right at the drop of my hat. I'll have a look and be back to report later.

FM will work fine. EU band is actually a bit wider than US at the 88 end.

So here I'm back with what I have found about Blaupunkt Autoradios. It is not entirely deciphered, but there is some progress…
I am no specialist in car sound installations, and did my best, but If someone knows better than my poor efforts, please chime in!

The designations could be explained as such: (the Blaupunkt Bremen SQR-46 taken as an example)
The "letter-numbers" group define the main general characteristics of the head unit.

The letters (following table valid until 1990) gives some of the technical characteristics and have the following meaning:
S = Sendensuchlauf (automatic research)
Q = Quartz Synthetisizer Empfänger (reception through Quartz Synthesizer)
C, CR = is an autoradio WITH cassette
M = Sendenspeicher (memory of stations)
R = WITH cassette and autoreverse
I = PCI technik
D = CD

The numbers have the following meaning:
- the first number, usually 2, 4 or 8 is the total output in Watts, irrespective of the numbers of channels (two or four, but usually in the eighties these head units had the two options):
"2" means 20 watts output (either 4 X 5 or 2 X 10)
"4" means 30 to 40 watts output
"8" means between 70 and 80 watts output
If the first number is "0", it means the head unit cannot produce any sound without the addition of an external amplifier.

- the second number is the year of production of the unit: "6" means 86, but some units were not renewed each year, so it is possible for a 1985 car to have a Blaupunkt with a "3" for instance.

Our Bremen SQR-46 is therefore a head unit having automatic research for stations ("S") , receiving throug a Quartz Synthesizer ("Q") and having a cassette deck ("R") in that case with autoreverse; it has a total output of about 40 Watts ("4") and this model has been born in 1986 ("6").

Now for the names…it is a bit more difficult, at least until now.
It seems that the names (always of cities) could change for an identical unit, whether it has blue, or green color of lighting; whether the front is extractible or not, etc…
It also seems (I am not positive on this) that some models have a name of an american city when they have been specifically adapted to the american market, for instance, the "Reno" is the same unit as the "Bremen", but for the american market.

As a final example, the choice of Blaupunkt head units for the Porsche 928 in the 1988 Porsche catalogue was:
- Berlin IQR 87
- Bremen SQR 46
- Toronto SQR 46
- Ludwigsburg SQM 26
- Boston SQM 23

If my understanding is correct, we see immediately that the "Berlin" is the most technologically advanced ("I") and has the strongest output (about 80 watts)
The "Bremen" and "Toronto" must be somewhat identical, as both are SQR 46 (perhaps "Toronto" being same as "Bremen", but specifically for the North American market?)
"Ludwigsburg" and "Boston" are radios only, no cassette (no C, CR, or R in their designation)

Nerofer, have you ever seen a Pozzi Pioneer radio cassette for a gtb offered for sale. Mine currently has an Alpine TDM- 7548R (or possibly 7547R but there isn't much difference) which I am sure is not original.

 

Only once since I have been strongly interested in objects related to Ferraris, that is, about six years ago, when I began to look for my first 328.
It was last year and it has been advertised in a specialised site, perhaps E-Bay France, I'm not quite sure. It sold in less than an hour...
They are indeed very rare, as most things from the "old Pozzi days" (= before Pozzi was bought by Neubauer)

By the way, does your car have its yellow Pozzi sticker on the rear window? This is something that is much valued by the french Ferrari enthusiasts...here is a picture of one...taken on the net
