No shock there. The team is successful, he's making tons of money, and he's the star.

Not at all. Expect a few people thought he would go to Ferrari; which I never saw as a real possibility.....

    Bummer.

Then again the combo Alonso/Vettel wouldn't have worked. So maybe Alonso retires by 2016 and Seb will join then.

Come to think of it, the timing makes actually sense:

Since we just learned that Webber is definitely out at the end of the season, this way Seb can make sure he gets to vote/pick his #2 for the next two years.

He is just lining up the ducks for a potential fifth and sixth title. Hopefully that won't happen.

I have no doubt he signed as there is a good possibility he has already cleared the new #2 for next year.

Personally, I look at this as a positive. Alonso is signed through 2016 and it is quite obvious that he wants #1 status at Ferrari. He's the best out there at the moment and will retire with Ferrari after hopefully bagging another title or 2.

Vettel's deal isn't long-term. To me, that shows he doesn't want to gamble too much of his future career - goes through the 2015 season which makes perfect timing for Vettel to join the Scuderia right as Alonso's contract expires. All it takes is a mediocre car from Newey (yes it's possible, it's already happened) and a great one from Rory (who is back working on the 2014 machine) and Vettel will begin to get restless and be ready to move just as he hits the zenith of his career - Schumi mk. II.

    Mark my words :)

Seb is still young so through 2015 is not big deal. However, if he never leaves Red Bull and builds something on his own then he will never have the opportunity to reach legendary status no matter how many titles he bags.

You keep repeating this in damn near every thread about Seb's legacy. It really seems like you're just trying to diminish what he's already accomplished. I honestly don't think someone needs to win titles with more than one team to become a legend. Give credit where it's due.

After Canada Im amazed others will put him down. He drove a great race and almost made a mistake or 2 proving he is human. He is an accomplished racer, multiple world champion. Someone tell me why he has a legacy not befitting his statistics.

Im in no way his biggest fan either. The episode with Webber this year has made me less of a fan. I do give respect to his overall legacy. He has won races with 2 teams as well.

He hasn't got the fourth yet. It's by no means a full gone conclusion, the gap isn't that big with only 7 races gone.

One can only hope that the new motors next year take RB out of the running for a while. SV is a total turd and a worm. Any more races (and I use that term lightly) like Canada, and I'm checking out.

F1 is a bore fest and more victories by Justin Bieber will kill the sport.

He has won what I am now calling 'Newey titles' i.e. the car is so good any decent driver could win a title. Webber has been too sloppy these past two years to really reap the benefits.

Newey title holders are not legends of the sport with the only exception being Alain Prost. However, Alonso is a legend for what he's done these past couple years, his work is far more impressive. I could care less about titles, they're numbers based on a quantum mechanic (the car).

Schumacher has only ever won in Byrne designed cars. Does that make him any less of a legend just because the same team changed uniforms?

Wow. Alonso is not a legend. He won two titles for Renault. What has he won since? Nothing. He's come close, but he hasn't won the titles. He's a great driver, but not a legend. I'd really be surprised to hear anyone besides the most diehard fans declare Alonso a legend. Remember, he hasn't won the title with more than one team.

That's exactly what I was thinking. The goal posta arw being moved to downplay Seb's accomplishments.

If they waited until the end of the season it would be Red Bull signing an extension with Vettel.
