The LM in question was 5909 while owned by Bob Epstien. This had been restored by Griswold and run in Steve Earle's first Monterey Historics. Epstien drove that car on the street and the track. He drove it several times from the SFO area to LA for club track events and also to Virginia City. I was driving it multiple times a week.

The car did run rich. Maybe that contributed to some of its idle habits. As it was in the winter months in LA it did take longer to become functional. I wouldn't move until it the temp moved off the peg. Wouldn't start to have fun until there was temp. It never idled at 1000 cold, warm or otherwise. It would the plugs when driving at low speed. Easily solved with a quick high rpm burst.

It was not running the Le Mans spur gears.

I suspect you know this car as it has been in Northern California ownership several times.

Something was wrong. My P cars idle at 1000 all day. One blip and the plugs unfoul. I'm including 0854 which still runs on plugs and points. These carbs need to be kept up and not everyone knows how to do that or has the proper parts. There are a lot of big restorers who have screwed up some of these cars including a one who lean burned a big cars motor into a sorry state.

As for warm up oil should be preheated before starting or at least cranked for a long while with ignition off. Ferrari often towed/pushed these cars around for a while in gear before starting them. The 512S manual very clearly recommends that.

New fuel's aren't as lubricating as they were in the day. We mix in go kart oil at 1 part per 200. That helps the carbs from wearing a bit.

Marcel, do you still have plans to update and/or reprint your 250LM book and if so when is it likely to be published?

This appears to be #5841 of Pierre Bardinon seen today at Le Mas du Clos. Apparently it does not get out much?

Sadly, as I am sure you are aware M. Bardinon is no longer with us.

Certainly not a photo taken at Mas du Clos. But probably at the Circuit du Vigeant, for the 18th "sport et collection", or 500 Ferrari against the cancer

I know the guy at the wheel : it is a faithful of Mas du Clos, since long time. He was accompanying the 250 GTO last year for the 50th anniversary rally.

I'm trying to clarify the early history of #8165 but only have barchetta and racingsportscars.com to help me.

    On this link :- 250 LM 8165

Barchetta says the car went straight to Piper and was entered at the International Trophy, Silverstone for Bob Bondurant who finished 10th.

While on this link :- Silverstone International - Sports Cars 1966 - Photo Gallery - Racing Sports Cars

rsc.com says Bob was listed but never drove but Mike Parkes did and came 10th, rsc does not give the chassis number of the #10 car that Mike drove can anyone confirm it was #8165?

Finally can anyone confirm if Piper loaned #8165 to Scuderia Filipinetti for the '66 1000kms at Nurburgring as it hard to imagine the car actually changed ownership for the one race, if indeed Parkes drove #8165 at Silverstone one month earlier ?

Relevant answers maybe credited and used in a forth coming blog.

Thanking you in anticipation of your responses.

That is a small step forward thanks Athanase.

So does that mean that #8165 was delivered new to Scuderia Filipentti and then sold to Piper after the Nurburgring 1000km's ?

Please do. Always interested in reading about the 250 LM. Is your blog about 8165 particularly or the 250 LM generally?

Hi, Interesting info about the Intl Trophy. In case you didn't know 8165 is the one with the fiberglass body. Regarding Barchetta there are a bunch of 1967/68 events missing.I think if you go to world sports racing prototypes it will give you what you need . tongascrew

I can only see the front view in the review of a concours at a chateau in France but I was wondering if this is one of the two or three with the plexiglass fastback rear window as one of the owners was Colin Crabbe, the late renowned British car finder, and I heard he had one of those.
I seem to remember one of the fastback ones being in the Middle East, maybe Oman?

At any rate, back to this particular car --it was bought by Richard Merritt (co-author of one of the first Ferrari histories) for $8000 between 1967, and 1970. The owner before was Rob de la Rive Box and the owner in 1970 Kirk White. What I am curious about is if it was ever advertised in Road & Track or Competition Press before 1970 and if that was considered a high price back then or par for the course? (for a few thousand more you could get a new Daytona!) Did anyone on FC try to buy it back then or remember why they turned it down (not enough racing history with only two races under its belt? Too frou frou with AC?)
I know to some these questions about what cars traded for then seem "water under the bridge" but I am trying to put car values in the context of their times, not an easy task with some having not enough sales to get a handle on their relative worth in certain eras.

5995 was originally a stock and standard 250 LM painted red and without plexiglass rear window. It was modified later (1966).
When Mark Tippetts owned it in the 1980s he had Dubai license plates on it.
Further details and history can be found in my book "Ferrari 250 LM" published 1983 by Osprey Publishing in the UK.
