Jim, this one is unknown to me. It looks Italian, early 1950s. Do you have any information that might help? What was the source of the photo? Can you identify any of the men?

I thought it may be de Portago but on second look, no.

A guy named "Trevor Gherardi" posted it on my FB page and said it was a photo of a car his father once owned but he didn't know what kind of car it was and asked if I did. Almost looks a bit Alfa?

Then possibly his father was B. Gherardi? If so, he competed in the Mille Miglia in '52, '53, and '54 - all in Fiat-based cars.

interesting..perhaps a bit of an "etcerini"...however a lot of that stuff had 32mm rudge hubs..this one appears to have 42's...perhaps built from a larger car..i think alfas from 1750's on up had the bigger hubs..these appear relaced to a smaller rim however....

Yes, and from this angle at least, the wheelbase appears to be a bit long for a Fiat-based etceterini from this period. I considered that it could have been a late rebody of an earlier Alfa (perhaps even a monoposto), but I don't know of any such car.

Also, as awkward as that grille is, the body doesn't appear to be something slapped together in-house by a small manufacturer. I would guess that a carrozzeria was involved; I just can't identify which one.

    Especially in left hand drive.

So it's not small enough to be a FIAT, and it's not an Alfa Romeo.

    Could it be French?

there is a small dot at the top pf the grill...perhaps an alfa badge?? the body designer/builder certainly seemed to love an alfa shape...also the driver is sitting quite high ....that suggests a perimeter frame of some sort..perhaps a production car chassis...and the car itself seems pretty squashed except the hump where the motor is....also looks like ifs of some sort....wild guess......an early mg td that an alfa-crazed italian had his way with :)

I just wonder if it is based on a old XK with a custom lightweight body. It was pretty common for them to rebody a damaged car. There is a lot of little XK cues in there.

an XK of that era is a pretty damn big car....this one seems a bit small...soneone also went and added smaller borranis with pirelli tires....[also XK's have 52mm hubs]

I found this car, which looks identical and has "Sebring" visible on the dash.

I saw this thing earlier this summer. Maybe it is a foolish question, as I don't know any pre-war car from a hole in the ground, but... what is it?
