Some call it sarcasm, some call it self reliance and self control. For the life of me I can't understand why some people are willing to relinquish their personal security to the government. I just don't get it. That behavior seems so regressive in light of known abusive and tyrannical governments on all continents. Being defenseless is not a positive character trait, imnsho. When seconds count, the police are only minutes away. Some prefer that regressive lifestyle. Many do not. To believe that removing guns from law abiding citizens reduces criminal activity is not supported by any study anywhere. Kai
I'm pretty sure we havent had an attempted armed robbery here where the perpetrator was gunned down by a gun toting civillian bystander....I will check the stats as you suggest...but as I said before I'm willing to bet that sort of thing just doesn"t happen here...and as strange as this sounds to you, I feel safer for it
So how do YOU protect yourself against an armed robbery when it happens to you? Beg for mercy? Hope the criminal wont harm you? Cry? Because you DO have robberies. From your Australian Institute of Criminology: "During the 12 months prior to interview, there were an estimated 126,300, or 346 per day, incidents of robbery. Both victimisation rates and reporting rates for robbery remained stable for 2010–11 compared with 2009–10, with no significant differences between these two periods both at a national and state and territory levels." But you are correct in your conclusion that your civilians cannot respond with a weapon of their own when attacked. So I ask again, when you are attacked, do you play turtle? Depend on the mercy of the attacker? Because attacks like that happen hundreds of times a day in AU. You feel safer being defenseless? What a distorted reality... That's where you and I are different. I prefer to be responsible for my own safety with CCW and unlike you I don't need the mercy of criminals. The article I posted reflects that. Kai
With bated breath I await news of your citizenry's overthrow of the government that it now seems spies on you for all it's worth. Good luck, we're all cheering for you!
One of the most amusing arguments the "gun rights" folks here make is that without weapons, the overthrow of the British would never have happened, and we'd still be British subjects. That argument is then stretched to, "Well, if someday our government gets out of control, becomes oppressive, then we 'll NEED our guns to fight back." Because, after all, my possessing a 9mm handgun will surely slow down an Abrams tank, or an F22, or even a well armed platoon of SWAT guys from the local PD when they come to take it away from me. Um, no. No it won't. I will, sure as shootin', end of dead. Dead, dead, dead. If the argument is about the "Right to bear arms" then skip the other crap and simply say, "The US Constitution's 2nd amendment guarantees my right to own a gun" and be done with it. All the other arguments are just smoke. Either the Constitution does or it does not, guarantee my right to own a gun. It does not explain WHY I can own one, just that I can. It doesn't tell me I HAVE to own one, just that I can. All this self defense mumbo jumbo is crap. Most Americans who own guns are clueless as to how to asses a risk or threat, how to avoid same, and how to shoot that nasty old gun they own AT their target with minimal risk to innocents around them. The thought that someone about to be mugged can whip out their pistol and fend off an attacker is ludicrous in probably 95% of gun owners. That person would most likely not be able to anticipate the problem, draw their weapon, decide when/if to do so, and then if/when to discharge the weapon. So, let's skip all that in the argument going forward if we're talking gun ownership in the USA, ans simply discuss/determine the validity of the 2nd Amendment on its face. I think most gun folks here would agree that they know squat about HOW to use that gun they own. Fchat is not a valid cross section of America for that assessment. D
LOL! Hoist upon your own petard and don't like it? An entire nation unable to exercise self control or personal responsibility, so it votes away its right to defend itself. Yet you still have crime and still have people shooting each other. Since you got rid of guns, your entire country is less safe. You have more assaults, not fewer. Your old people and your women can no longer defend themselves against stronger, younger men who choose to do them harm...and more are choosing to do harm because they know that there is no possibility of resistance. When seconds count, the police are only minutes away! Pap, the local policeman, can't or won't save you from those who are stronger and better armed. You're forced to defend yourself in the arena of ideas. After figuring out that you've been totally owned, you whine. Check out the title, Dave. It's not about Australia. It's about Aussies lecturing Americans that they should be as stupid as Australia and when we instruct you on all the reasons we don't want to go down the road you have chosen, you don't want to hear them because you now know that you have been had. Yes, have daddy shut the thread down so that you don't have to hear any more reasons why you are wrong. We yanks don't really give a crap what you do down under nor do we wish to tell you how to live your lives. So why don't you butt the **** out of ours?
Your post looks ludicrous in light of the million plus successful gun uses every year to ward off criminals. Kai
Dave, ever heard of Afghanistan or Iraq? Let's skip the false assumption that small arms can't effectively fight an entire high tech army with superior firepower. I'll take 300 million small arms over the entire US military. And if we ever did have the army rolling down our streets, I suspect that half of them would be fighting the other half, not the people. No need to throw this ridiculous red herring into the conversation, unless you are trying to tie in a Mad Max angle to keep it germane to Australia. Never heard of George Zimmerman, either have you? Trayvon Martin found out the hard way that George was armed. He is but one in many thousands each year who successfully defend themselves with firearms. Firing the weapon is almost never necessary. Just brandishing it almost always works. Being a crack shot isn't required. If the attacker keeps coming you shoot him at point blank. No aiming required. Your argument doesn't hunt. What makes legal gun ownership an effective crime deterrent is the fact that the bad guys do not know who is armed and who is not. When guns are outlawed, the outlaws know that only outlaws have guns. There's no response to that. Game over. That's why Australians are less safe than they were in 1995. Sure, they are less likely to get shot. BFD. They are more likely to get beat up and robbed and either knifed, bludgeoned, poisoned, drowned, run over by a car or pushed off of a cliff...all to save 6 lives a year from gunshots. That's statistically stupid.
damn, I like you now damn, I liked you before but now not so much usual BS from a moron here's an IQ I bet you fail : stick your head in a bucket of water 3 times, pull it out twice and then tell me how easy that was
I'm not sure whether you are being deliberatively provocative or you really are struggling with the concept that less people carrying guns = less risk of being killed by a gun It's pretty simple really (and backed up in the stats posted over and over in this thread) irrespective of what you "say" we....as in ALL Australians....feel safer as a result of the laws in this country. You again!!! I thought we had the stat discussion some pages back in this thread?? Did you miss it? http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/142307178-post1128.html I'm really very interested....no make that fascinated... in your maths and associated logic to back up your 6 lives per year claim above
Oh please, let's not ruin our perfectly awful relationship now. I am a gun owner. I own several in fact. I have trained in how to use them and asses risk but STILL do not carry one for self defense. I dunno, maybe I should, but in 58 years I have yet to be assaulted, robbed, bludgeoned, knifed, spat upon or otherwise injured by anyone who thought I was an easy mark. Must be my nasty disposition. D
no, you, nasty ? I thought I was the bad cop and you were suppose to be the good cop, whichever, I prefer being friends with people than getting nasty ......... who wants to be remembered as a lunatic, nasty piece of work ? (I'm sure this good mood of mine will pass and we can return to the usual hostilities )
If you assume that all homicides are committed with guns, your chart would be helpful. If all homicides were committed with guns, then you would have experienced 260 in 2010. How is that possible if guns were outlawed in 1995? That figure, of course isn't just murders committed with guns. It even includes manslaughter, which (at least in the US) is unintentionally killing someone with criminal negligence. Drunk driving is manslaughter. The number of murders in Australia is quite low. That's why taking the extreme step of outlawing guns is such a ridiculous measure to take.
Unfortunately neither are you,you are inciting these morons. Mind you,I know you and I'm sure you are enjoying yourself in getting their gander up!
That is a task for trained professionals like zookeepers and veterinarians only. Would not recommend an attempt by any member of the general public, goose enthusiast or otherwise.
Yep,these clowns keep on bringing up the same ol,same ol,knives, car's,hammer's,blah, blah, etc. They just don't get it,so why not just leave 'em to it.
It is pretty funny. Running victory laps for having the courage to admit that they were not mature enough to handle freedom. They celebrate the fact that, as a nation, they cannot control themselves and must vote away their freedoms to save themselves from themselves. Yes, how very advanced they are as a society. Gents, with liberty and freedom comes responsibility. When you grow up enough, you might be able to understand. Until then, you will be very happy with someone else making decisions on your behalf. Come visit us in the US sometime. Bring your big boy knickers.
Well actually I wish everyone would just stop the insult/counter insult cycle.. it's just getting worse and worse now.. these "gun" threads never end or go well and it's all getting pretty distasteful all round.. We all have our opinions, backgrounds, gripes and biases.. P&R is a good place for all of that.. If I go into P&R I know what to expect.. the rest of the site should be more civilised.. no matter what the thread title..
