Me too. Anyone doing Ferrari Racing Days at COTA this year? I think I might bring the ScudXX out to play...the circuit looks really fun.
The engine it self doesn't sound bad, there's a lot of induction noise from the turbo which I know is to be expected but it still slightly puts me off liking these engines.
As for the sound all I can say is: I'm SOOOOOOOOOOO glad I'm going to Austin this year! That said I'm really looking forward to the shakeup and technical/engine development we'll see next year and the year after (at least until the next 6 year engine freeze)
I didn't realize how bad this sounds until listening to it through proper speakers. But.. turbos are the future of road car engines. Shame about the sound, but it's about time F1 had some road car relevance (to mfrs other than Ferrari).
It should be an interesting time of rebirth in F1. Everything will be different with these engines, and setups will become very different due to their power delivery. The top engine may be the WDC and WCC decider next year, with aero being a close #2 to what the top engine is capable of. It's going to be a very interesting OR very boring season if one team gets things very very right with their engine (that team will win everything).
From the clip it sounds like a let-down compared to the NA engines run today, but I'll reserve judgement until I hear it at full song. As some of you have already noted, that was nowhere near 15K rpm, and was probably recorded indoors with a lot of the sound being vented out with the exhaust. I actually enjoy the induction noise, but F1 would be so devalued if it lost its screaming engines!
Just listened to a Motorsport Magazine podcast on the new regulations for 2014 and I am less excited about next year than I was before. The panel that they had included James Allison and a representative from Williams. One of my concerns is that they said that the drivers will need to preserve energy (fuel) for later in the race to make sure that they have enough for the end of the race and this will encourage holding station behind the car in front and not passing for the initial portion of the race. Less passing, lower rpm and the new noise are making me very happy I went to Montreal this month and contemplating a trip to Austin in the fall.
With the fuel flow restrictions, I expect more races to become economy runs. I hope it's not like 1988 (the most boring season in F1 history).
