    Dear All,

Quick question, does the engine have to come out for an alternator replacement? wondering if I should add a new one to my 30k service list

    Thanks

Probably not depending on what kind of car you are thinking of.

If 348, then no - a colleague just re-built his last summer, engine remained in place.

However, maybe the other way around i.e. should I replace my alternator during the next engine-out?

Let me preface in saying that I don't own a 348 yet... but from everything I've read on the alts lately I would most certainly replace mine if the original was still installed.

Pretty sure mine is still original at 44,700 miles in 95 355, but not sure if it has been rebuilt. I was having problems with my alt 2 years ago, and it was the little green plug. Just happened again, and my lovely shop rebuilt the plug itself, all is good again.

The alternator can be removed with the engine still in place. It only takes about 30 minutes to remove it.

just finished rebuilding my alternator last weekend, no you dont remove the engine, its easy to get to in place and the same for the a/c compressor aswell even though i removed my a/c compressor altogether as dont need a/c or want the extra weight that comes with it either, those compressors are a heavy thing

Sorry for my stupid omission, mine is a 96, 5.2 355
So the alternator can be replaced with the engine in?

Engine out work likely to commence next week, thanks!

    Yes

Rebuild the alt belt tensioner bearing and convert it from stud mount to bolt mount while you have the engine out
