If it's a 355, the engine needs to come out. I hope you are having someone do this that knows what they are doing...

I just got quoted $6300 from Ferrari of Fort Luaderdale for the timing belt job.

    Does this sound about right??

A major service is more than just the belts, but yes, depending on what they are including, that's within the range.

If it's a 348, I would also recommend engine out. Aside from the fact that it's almost as much work to do it engine in; depending on when your last service was, if it's a 348 and you haven't had those stupid plastic blocks that tension the oil pump chain checked for wear, get that done. It's wise to get the water pump rebuilt. If it's an older 348 and you don't know what kind of bearings you have at the back of the cam belt drive wheel shaft, you need that checked too (older cars had roller bearings that can fail... need to be ball bearings). Then there's the question of checking valve clearances, maybe repaint valve covers etc. etc.

That's very fair and FMFL is an excellent dealership - both sales and service.

    Regarding OP - Out definitely.

Their web site shows $5850 for a major on a 355 (vintage service program). What else are you having done?

Engine has to come out, not much chance of getting the crankshaft pulley off with the engine in the car. It isn't that hard to remove the engine and like others have stated there is a lot of stuff to check out (tensioners, valve clearances etc.) if they haven't been checked in a few years.

Think of it like this. Which way is it better to change your tires, with the rims on the car or off???

Strongly recommend engine out, and recommend ignoring the guy who suggested leaving the engine in

Some things just need to be brushed off and set out for public viewing once again. As is often the case, a picture speaks a thousand words but, leave the "I prefer leather, standing up" out of the conversation..... That will go no where good!

On the other hand, anything to get Dave Helms to post again is a good thing. Now, what do we have to do to get Brian Cralls to post again?
