I got code p0600 which is a "serial communication link issue". Who knows what that is? Communication from left ECU to Right ECU via CAN line messed up? How do you trouble shoot that? Since I get this error at the "D-sub" connector is this problem at the connector? between ECU's? I assume this is a physical problem in hardware?

I would definitely suspect the hard connection(s) itself first and foremost. After that, there could be a line signal fault (short / open) somewhere in the physical wiring. Last of all, would be a signal generation / reception fault at the board level ---- but, that would be rare and unlikely.

If this is 360 or 430 vintage it is fairly common for the car to start on one bank. Much more common on 360. If this occurs it will throw a communication fault. Does it reoccur once the code is cleared and is it present in more than one ECU.

    Mark,

Thanks for your reply. It is on a 550 so same vintage. Once cleared, the code comes back as a pending code. I have not driven it around long enough for it to actually set the code. My generic odb@ testor testing from the obd "D" connector does not tell me if it is left or right bank.

What would cause starting on one bank?

With 550's can I swap out ECU's from another car to eliminate those issues? There is history that ECU got wet from typical water down the "A" piller. I seem to remember some kind of chip burning identification thing that goes on like in 360's and their alarm system so swapping 360 ecu's from one car to another was a No-no??

Carl, my right hand ECU is from another car. No issues installing or running it at all. Just the usual precautions of disconnecting all power, making sure the car & I were earthed to the same potential, etc. Installed it, turned the battery back on, fired it up and ran it through the usual learning, etc. and not a moment's trouble with it since.

If the car is equipped with a immobilizer system once the motronic is installed in the RH side and the key turned on it permanently burns the immobilizer id into itself. It can be run as a LH motronic in any car without issue. It is always nice to leave the LH unit unburned in case you need to replace the immobilizer as you will need to swap the LH to RH in order to burn the fresh immobilizer id.

For anyone in the future I figured it out or at least made my code stay away. This code p0600 appears to mean, master ECU communication problems via the CAN bus with other sub-system ECU's. It may mean other things too. What I have no clue. So some subsystems like steering ecu's, alarm ecu's, traction control ECU's etc. may not be communicating with the master ECU. A subsystem code like a missing suspension actuator will throw a suspension code but will not throw the serial link communication p0600 code since the suspension ECU is still communicating with the master ECU. Hope that helps somebody.
