Can anyone tell me if this road still has unsealed sections?

If so, is there an interesting sealed route from Eden to Lakes Entrance (other than Highway 1) ?

There is still about 4klm of dirt, some potholes, the rest is sealed. This is on the Vic side,NSW is all sealed.
Watch out for 'roos,ie don't drive it at early morn, dusk or night.
Steve at Bombala shire council supplied that info and I added it would be an old fart in an old Ferrari,he said 'no problem'.
Surprising what an oldskool 'phone call will do.

    Greetings Ian

Consider the Jindabyne to Dalgety to Bombala Road. Now all tarred and a magnificent 'sweeping' road.

AFAIK the Bombala to Cann River. road is all tarred.

An alternate route from Pambula to Bombala is via the Mt Darragh road .. more pretty than the Brown Mountain road.

Phil ... PS .. Still no further response from those who I sent the Concours notes to

    Phil,

yes, I have both the Dalgety and Mt Darragh roads in the route.

Can you pm your email address - I'd like you opinion on the plans.

Apathy rules again re the concours system. Can I suggest you run as state president next time, then we'll fix it together!

    Ian

I'm still waiting for last years concours trophy. The current committee is incompetent. The secretary is completely devoid of manners and basic communication skills

I know. Last time I did it was towing the Stratos to the 2005 Alpine at Lakes Entrance. We finished working on the car at 2am in Sydney and were on the start line in Lakes Entrance at 11am. Sleep is for wussies.

The Monaro hwy was all a bit of a blur... and you'd be surprised to hear that the Stratos didn't last beyond the second stage!

For anyone who likes Stratos' :

Just back from a 6 week trip with two visits to Hong Kong .. luvvit. Egypt, the Sudan and Northern France continuing my work with World War 1 Graves.

A very short dissertation on what I consider to be one of the World's Greatest driving experiences. Kerrari and Simon at least will know what I mean.

In 1984 on our first visit to HK we had the option of a taxi from Kai Tak or a bus. We chose wisely .. taxi ... and what a trip. Then the new airport opened at Chek Lap, and quite a bit further to the Hotel .. but the new metro was quicker and cheaper ... we still chose taxi. Since then we have had about 20 trips to and fro.

    Why is it so good??

    A decent trip .. about 30 minute.

    Cost about $250HKD ($35AUD).

PLUS .. always in a Toyota Crown with NO suspension worth speaking about, steering that is best described as vague and tyres that look as though they would be classed as slicks for an FCA Track day.

Room for two suitcases and two carry-ons in the boot and a bungee cord to keep the boot shut ... so about 70kgs way out the back .. rather like a Porsche!!

Our last trip was REALLY excellent ... it was drizzling rain and Julie was a bit concerned so asked the driver to go a bit slower .. which instantly insulted him, as I don't think he spoke English too well ... so with knuckles going white with rage on the wheel we were on the way. The extra weight out the back meant we even drifted on the mildest of corners and the speedo if it was accurate showed 120kph in spots.

You arrive at HK Airport a bit limp .. both from the heat and humidity as well as the mental exercise :):)

Helsinki airport in February, 2am, minus 20C. The snow is piled 2m either side of the road, which itself is covered in packed snow. Not a patch of tarmac to be seen.

You get into a Volvo station wagon taxi that has done half a million klicks, yes it has snow tyres but the suspension long ago faded away. You just know the driver had a vodka or two while he was waiting for a fare. Then he takes you to town, never below 100kmh, constantly sideways, one hand on the wheel, overtaking trucks throwing up impenetrable crud.

Made me realise why the Finns are such good competition drivers. :)

Even your sphincter would be tight riding in one of those cabs, so no problem there

Hey Phil (or other Fcar tragics) next time you're in HK let me know _ I'm starved of car chat here and missing my cars more than ever... Looks like I'm going to be here for sometime yet so both cars are going to foster homes. Bambi to Uncle Jack (who did the body reno) and big car to Fiat lady who would be known to anyone who uses racing clutches.

My most memorable taxi trip was in Sydney many years ago. Wet Friday night with some big event on and I was running late for my flight. Told the driver (who had rudimentary English) my predicament and he took off like a scalded cat until the traffic ground to a halt somewhere in Surry Hills and he darted down a side street. I had no idea where where we were when he started going cross country across a shopping centre carpark... anyway he screexhed to a halt in front of the airport with 5 mins to spare and all I could say was "Thanks and I'm sorry i doubted you!" With a big tip - he just grinned.

Las Vegas in 1980 I organised flights for about 8 of the boys in the RAAF to LA for the weekend, we got one of those extended chassis taxis to McCarron , the lady driver arrived early, I remembered that there was the possibility of getting an earlier flight so offered her double the fee plus double tip if she could get there FAST.

She drove VERY fast and VERY well but missed the timeframe for an earlier flight, but we still paid her the fee because it was an excellent trip with us all laughing and egging her on :)

(I reckon I could have got there on time, but then I always reckon that)
