    That's a good point. I was using zero wind. If you had a 777 with no flaps you would be looking for a nice long runway with at least no tailwind component.

    That's a pretty good headwind at landing!

    So, the guys here who wondered why the girl was hit by the firetruck

    She was on the ground and covered in foam.

    Still think it was the fault of the firefighters?

    Any airliner can glide to a landing with or without flaps. The 707 had an L/D close to 20+ , glide speed would be higher than heck and as one Boeing engineer said 53 years ago, " It'll need lots of runway and stopping the damn thing at the end would be a bit of a problem."

    You really think that in the chaos of a plane crash, with people running around and a person laying prone on the ground covered with foam it is not excusable that the fire truck hit her? The firefighters are negligent?

    Really?

    Do they have xray vision on those firetrucks? Are they suppose to tip toe up to the burning plane to make sure no one is under the foam? Do they have specific training on how to deal with foam possibly covering victims?

    Seems difficult for me to blame the firefighters here.

    I know that. I do them often when simulating flap or electrical failure.

    My point was that the idiot journalist was trying to show "what it should look like", he then picked a plane that can barley attain the 777 landing speed, and didn't use flaps so had a totally different view from a normal 172 landing let alone that of the Asiana pilot

    Warning: the end of the video shows politicians getting their names/faces on air. One, naturally wants to pass legislation to make sure this doesn't happen again.

    Agreed. This is a good example of why Good Samaritan laws exist. They were doing the best the could with a very fast moving situation.

    It is very unfortunate but I can't see any real blame based in the limited info I've seen.

    I am in Joplin, Missouri and they were talking about this on the radio, taking GREAT delight in it. They played the recording over and over again...and promised to do it later as well!

    KTVU Channel 2 is apologizing for an on-air gaffe that the station — or viewers – won’t soon forget.

    During the noon newscast Friday, co-anchor Tori Campbell, announced that “KTVU has just learned the names of the four pilots who were on board” Asiana flight 214 when it crashed at San Francisco International Airport on Saturday.

    She then read from a teleprompter while a TV graphic displayed four fake names that clearly were someone’s idea of a joke.

    The first name — “Captain Sum Ting Wong” — should have been a give-away that something really was wrong. But Campbell kept reading… “Wi Tu Lo, Ho Lee Fuk, Bang Ding Ow.”

    Yikes.

    After a break, Campbell made an on-air correction, clarifying that the names were clearly wrong — but that they had confirmed them earlier with the National Transportation Safety Board.

    KTVU news director Lee Rosenthal did not immediately turn our calls seeking comment.

    This incident happened days after station made a web promo hyping its crash coverage:

    “This past weekend viewers flocked to KTVU Channel 2 News for coverage of the tragic crash of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 at San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

    KTVU Channel 2 News owned this breaking news story with a number of firsts!

    - First on-air.
    - First on-line.
    - First with alerts to mobile devices.
    - First on Twitter & Facebook.
    - First with aerial shots from KTVU NewsChopper 2.
    - First with a live reporter from the scene.
    - First live interview with anyone connected to someone on the flight.

    Rosenthal is quoted in the promo: “Being first on air and on every platform in all aspects of our coverage was a great accomplishment, but being 100% accurate, effectively using our great sources and social media without putting a single piece of erroneous information on our air, is what we are most proud of as a newsroom.”

    Here are my ideas:

    1) If airline pilot is new to airport or plane (first 1,2,or 3 times?) or not current (5 years,10 years?),then instrument landing guidance system must be used and autothrottle (if on plane) must be used.

    2) Copilot/flight instructor must be taught that it is his DUTY to comment,criticize,and intervene as necessary for airplane safety.

    I recently finished several months of aerobatics training. My instructor was half my age,and I let him know that I wanted feedback. We worked out a system of verbal cues that gave me feedback during stunts with as few words and as little distraction as possible.

    Hold on, the foam was _their_ foam. It wasn't there before the first crew arrived. With a plane split in half it's reasonable to assume there are passengers around, so it's important not to douse them in foam and subsequently run over them. I recognize it's a challenging situation, but without knowing details I wouldn't dismiss the possibility of negligence.

    It's the same with friendly fire accidents. Sometimes negligent, sometimes not.

    Know your backstop.

    Respectfully disagree. The aircraft was VERY intact, the early video and pics showed people calmly walking away some with their bags. It took some time for the fire to start.

    The only open area was a small hole in the tail where it broke, it was not " ripped in half" at any point, until they cut it to move it. I do not see how it is the fault of the fire / crash and rescue people. Terrible accident.

    Or at least make sure they have the same amount and quality of training and experience as do the pilots of the American majors, British Airways, Lufthansa, Qantas and I would assume Virgin

    The National Transportation Safety Board apologizes for inaccurate and offensive names that were mistakenly confirmed as those of the pilots of Asiana flight 214, which crashed at San Francisco International Airport on July 6.

    Earlier today, in response to an inquiry from a media outlet, a summer intern acted outside the scope of his authority when he erroneously confirmed the names of the flight crew on the aircraft.

    The NTSB does not release or confirm the names of crewmembers or people involved in transportation accidents to the media. We work hard to ensure that only appropriate factual information regarding an investigation is released and deeply regret today's incident.

    Appropriate actions will be taken to ensure that such a serious error is not repeated.
