    My mistake…Karajan was just checking out a 1975 930 at Weissach (photo from JOEV, post #701) and it was not his delivery.

    The 1000th Turbo was delivered on May 5th, 1976, with Ernst Fuhrmann and it's new owner Princess Antoinette zu Furstenburg (left of car, bouquet) of Sweden. Her father was a porsche-phile, campaigning a 356 on the Swedish Rally of the Midnight Sun.

    The 934 was a direct derivative of the Turbo-Carrera, produced for Group 4 Grand Touring events. Early 934s used 1976 MY 930 chassis numbers which somewhat skew the "production numbers" which are often noted. The 1976 934 numbers ran from 9306700151-9306700180, and 9306700540, 31 cars priced at 97,000 DM ($40,000). By this time the 930 production numbers easily surpassed the homologation requirements for Group 4 racing, 400 units for '76. The vehicles were all from the '76 ROW allotment.

    Here is Chassis number 9306700159 (Tebernum Racing Team). The 934 had 50mm(front) and 100mm (rear) fender flares, a larger front spoiler and larger BBS wheels, . Many 934s used the tried and true 2993cm 95x70.4mm flat-6 and the 4 speed gearbox both in the 930. If you own a early 3.oL turbo-carrera and you've never seen a 934 in person, I definitely recommend it, it will put a big smile on your face.

    I'm not sure what is the stripe is on the hood but this same car (plate S – AZ 3030) appeared in the 20 July 1974 Auto Motor und Sport. Since it appeared in a July ’74 magazine, it may have been a very early 930, perhaps with a preproduction chassis number (9305700001 to 9305700010). It’s hard to see in this scanned photo but it does have the turbo decals that were also on the 1973 silver 911 Turbo German show car (often confused online as a 1974 show car). Note the dual rear fog lights. Are any of these early preproduction 930’s survivors stored in a Porsche warehouse?

    Motor’s November 1975 issue featured the new Porsche Turbo. Their test 930 was a UK market RHD and had several unique features. It was equipped with a Durant driver’s mirror since a factory RHD mirror was not available in 1975. Additionally, it was fitted with optional “M 395”, Pirelli P7 tires - 225/50 VR 15 on the rear and 205/50 VR 15 on the front. For some reason, Porsche did not lower the ride height on this early 930 and it was riding quite high for the low profile P7’s. According to the factory manual, ‘75 930’s that were fitted with optional P7’s were also fitted with gearbox Type 930/32 providing a different final drive ratio of i = 4.000 vs. i = 4.222 with gearbox Type 930/30 with standard 215/60 VR 15 and 185/70 VR 15 tires. The manual also mentions that a tachometer (may actually be a typo for speedo?) matching the smaller type diameter P7’s must be fitted.

    The interior was equipped with black watch tartan cloth inserts and one of their photos shows the absence of the embroidered Turbo script on the left-hand rear seat back.

    You’re welcome. Here’s a nice shot of S – CD 1337 that also shows the absence of turbo script on the left-hand seat back, the "fat" 380mm 3-spoke steering wheel, and the correct driver’s body-painted mirror. Also note the driver’s groovy 1975-period shirt collar.

    Car Magazine’s December 1974 issue featured the new Porsche Turbo. Their Guards red test 930 was a British market RHD fitted with a Durant driver’s mirror, non-optioned air conditioning and sunroof. This may have been a preproduction 930 and may have also been at the October 1974 London Motor show (see post #1389, London 930 was RHD). In the magazine's cover photo, the car has plate “30 Porsche Turbo” and the article photos show Fuchs with a highly polished finish without the self-adhesive support plate for the value stems (these were on production 930’s according to the March 1975 factory Porsche 930 service manual). Car magazine did actually test drive this car (with plate GLP 870N) and the author mentioned that it had perforated brake discs lending credence that this was a 1975 preproduction 930 and like S-CD 1337, was equipped with Carrera 3.0 RSR brakes.

    The issue also featured a full page advertisement urging those who are dreaming about the new Turbo where to order one and a Jet (Jeans?) ad with the new turbo in the background.

    Here’s a white 1975 Porsche 930 that just sold in the UK - chassis number 9305700140. It appears original except the mirrors. There are no photos of the interior except the 300 KM/H speedometer that looks period correct but has unusual red range markings (similar to Japanese market Porsche speedos from the 1970's??).

    Interesting…there were no 1975 model year 930s exported to Japan but in 1976, there were 28 delivered (included in the ROW series). From the exterior (except for the mirrors) it’s difficult to tell the difference between the 1975 and 1976 model years (both had 15 inch Fuchs). Perhaps this is actually a 1976 930 made for the Japanese market in September to December 1975. I was speculating on the full chassis number from an enlargement I made of one of the posted images (could only make out the number 140) so perhaps this is actually a 1976 930 - 9306700140 made for the Japanese market in Sept-Dec 1975 which would explain the speedometer with the red range markings.

    I believe the small rear vent was for both 1975 and 1976 (ROW) 930’s with non-optioned A/C. 1975 930's with A/C had a larger rear vent.

    1975 930’s had 300 KM/H electronic speedometers that looked like the one depicted but without the red range markings. The 1976 speedometers for the Japanese market would have been made in very small numbers so I’m not sure if they required a different part number.

    For the 1975 and 1976 (ROW) 930’s, the 300 KM/H speedometers should have two different part numbers depending on if Pirelli P7 tires were installed. Verifying the speedometer part number may be the best way to determine if a 930/32 transmission was installed since the PCNA COA’s only specify optional “Pirelli Tires” and this could have been for Pirelli CN36’s with the 930/30 transmission as well. I’ll check out the part number on my 300 KM/H speedometer to verify what Pirelli tires were originally installed on my '75 930.

    My ’75 930 300 KM/H electronic speedometer (dated Oct 74) has part number 911.641.532.00 and I believe this indicates it was used with 215/60 VR 15 tires (Pirelli CN36 optional). For ‘75/76 ROW 930’s, I believe it breaks out something like this:

    1975 930
    911.641.532.00: 215/60 VR 15 tires (Pirelli CN36 optional) with gearbox type 930/30
    911.641.501.00: 225/50 VR 15 tires (Pirelli P7, M395 option) with gearbox type 930/20

    1976 930 (ROW)
    911.641.532.00: 215/60 VR 15 tires (Pirelli CN36 optional) with gearbox type 930/30
    911.641.501.00: 225/50 VR 15 tires (Pirelli P7 M395 option) with gearbox type 930/20
    911.641.539.00: Japan - 215/60 VR 15 tires (Pirelli CN36 optional) with gearbox type 930/30

    The May 1975 issue of Wheels Magazine featured the same red Porsche Turbo (plate “30 Porsche Turbo”) that appeared in the December 1974 issue of Car Magazine.
