Excellent thought, Chas... and we'll do that.

There aren't any local issues with the use of the music, and on our website, we originally bought the license (through the Harry Fox agency) to allow for electronic downloads (because we use a US-based server), but as we added more and more music, it got pretty expensive (average cost was about $300 a song annually), so we only allow site visitors to play, but not download our covers.

We really enjoy playing the Joe Cocker version of "The Letter." (Yes, I know the Boxtops did the original).

Love Shack is a great one to consider adding... thanks!

Excellent suggestions! We did "Don't Fear The Reaper" two years ago... probably time to dust it off.

I keep a small pad of paper and a pen in the car just for that reason, and my wife (who runs sound for us) keeps one in her purse. Anytime we're out and hear a potential song, it gets written down.

if you (and/or the wife) have a smart phone, download the Shazam app. I use it all the time to identify songs.

We do that, and enjoy it... unfortunately, we've been doing it off and on for three years... I don't want the audiences we have to get tired of hearing the same thing over and over again. But, thanks, Dave!

As I read this thread, the local pub has Alice Cooper "We're All Clones" on the jukebox. Sounds like a fun, kinda upbeat song that would fit with your set list, just not sure how the 'message' would play with an embassy audience...

Also, Three Dog Night "Never Been To Spain" comes to mind. I heard a bar band do that one a few months ago and they had a ball playing it. It's one of those songs that you can take as far and as long as you like, and add in layers depending on your audience.

Just listened to Clones... it does sound like fun... actually, one of our more popular songs at the US embassy is Fogarty's "Fortunate Son".... (which, frankly, surprised me).

We did "Never Been to Spain" last season, and being from Oklahoma, I had fun with it... and it never failed, the audience (for the most part) would always sing along!

Didn't see anyone suggest Tom Petty. Easy to play and well liked. A buddy is a former member of Firefall (Just remember I love you, etc.) Again, well liked and recognized. Newer Stones (Get your Ya-Yas Out and forward). Stevie Ray Vaughn Pride and Joy. A little harder rock, Thin Lizzie The Boys are Back in Town. ZZ Top stuff from Eliminator

I play as well and we are always looking for easy learn, easy play stuff that people will recognize and dance to. It can be a challenge.

Thanks... Duane had suggested Break Down and I Won't Back Down, both by Tom Petty.

Firefall is good, but heavy on the two- and three-part harmony, which is the same problem we have with Little River Band and some of the Eagles tunes (which are sometimes four- and five-part harmony.

We've been working on The Boys are Back in Town, and have it at about 80%. I don't like to play anything 'live' until we all have it down clean and tight.

We've also done some of the stuff from ZZ Top's Eliminator. The problem is mixing it in with the other stuff we do... both rhythmically and harmonically, it's very different, and therefore hard to fit in, sometimes.

I hear ya on finding new stuff... maybe you'll get something from this thread, too... hope so!

Yep....I forgot ZZ Top, here's the one's I've done live.

    Pearl Necklace - Boring simple.
Changes - Got to have the synth thing there.
La Grange - Staple, always works.
    Tush - Good one
    Legs - pulsing synth thing

A few more I can't remember, but any of the newer stop is going to have synth pads.

    I also forgot;

Stones - Start me Up - always works.
    Pride and Joy - SRV
Never done Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) and I've rarely seen anyone pull that off well.
Smokin' in the Boys Room - Brownsville Station
Born to Be Wild - Steppenwolf
Magic Carpet Ride - Steppenwolf - all time classic, and fun song to play, especially the funky middle part

I've never seen anyone pull of Kansas, or the Beach Boys, or Yes, esepcially the 90125 and beyond material.

And I've never really see anyone do spot-on Elton John songs. In the South, though, he's not popular with the bar going crowd.

The first time I ever went in a bar in my entire life was to play music in a band professionally for the first time, age 19, and it was a biker bar, scared to death. We started
playing born to be wild and the floor was covered with bikers, first time I saw a woman 'disrobe' whilst dancing in person. I was thrilled with the $300 pay for two nights work, alot for a college kid.

OK, here's my list... tried to stick with upbeat stuff (but nothing super-driving) with a couple of slower ones in there... this list should be fun for both listeners & players, and only a couple of them might be a tiny bit hard to learn. Depending on how long your sets & breaks are, this could also work out as a good set list in the order shown:

Life is a Highway - Tom Cochrane
I think I'm in Love - Eddie Money
Never Been any Reason - Head East
    Closer to the Heart -Rush
My Old School - Steely Dan
In a Big Country - Big Country
    Hitch a Ride - Boston
Hold Your Head Up - Argent
    Since You've Been Gone - Rainbow (Yes, it's a Russ Ballard Double-shot :) )
In the City - Joe Walsh
    Give Blood - Pete Townshend
Just a Job to Do - Genesis
    Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel
    Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel
Space Age Love Song - Flock of Seagulls
Goodbye Elenore - Toto (If you use this as your last song of the night, you have to substitute the word "audience" for "Elenore" in the final chorus :D )

    Tunes below...
