Woosh Sound?

Can't say that my 430 does that?

 

My 430 doesn't do it but I used to have a Gallardo SE that made the same noise under the same condition. The mechanic at the dealership told me it was the throtle body. I don't know if that's what it was or not but I kind of liked the sound it made....

 

My Scud does this...its from the aftermarket BMC air filters I believe. Another guy I know who has stock air filters in his Scud says that his car doesnt make this sound,

 

My 360 makes a good amount of intake sound under the conditions you describe. I have carbon boxes with stock filters and tubi exhaust. The guys at my local dealer (Miller) said it's normal on 360s.

 

Mine makes the intake sound as well when I step on it.

 

I am pretty sure I can hear mine but then I am supposed to with the GruppeM that the PO installed!

Normal. Both my 360 *and* my MR2 Spyder do it. Stock air filter + Tubi on the 360 and K&N on the MR2 Spyder in case either are a factor.

 

Yes I was also concerned about this noise and I think lots of others are too only to find its completely normal. It sounded mechanical to me as well but passengers say its definitely just air being sucked in through the intake as they are right next to the intake (rhd cars). I can only hear it with that side window open though and actually prefer to keep it closed. I did start a thread a while back asking why each side of my car sounds different and thats why. I hear a whoosh when slightly pressing the accellerator, then a roar from the intake between 3k-5k revs.

I checked my filters and the previous owner had upgraded to k&n filters. I don't know how this compares to stock filters or bmc ones but in all honesty I would rather just hear the roar from the engine rather than induction. You can also fiddle with the noise by modding or replacing the ressonance chamber that is behind the drip tray and carries the air from the external opening to the air filters. You can drill more holes into it or replace it with a challenge version which is essentially just a flexi pipe ducting. There are threads I've read here that say it can make big changes and would be very cheap and easy to do.

You should be able to hear the change. At idle the intake is at an atmospheric pressure thats negative aka a vacuum. When the throttle body opens (electronically, not 1:1 with pedal), then the intake pressure goes from vacuum to 1 atmosphere (1 bar or 14.x psi depending on altitude and unit system). This sudden change is a longer version of a vacuum sealed product being opened and the sound the inrush of higher pressure air makes. Its normal, just not always audible. If you have had the pleasure of driving a NA (normally aspirated) vehicle with a Cone air filter then you have likely heard it. It only lasts 100-800 milliseconds depending on many factors like the volume of the intake (Throttle body to valves), displacement, compression ratio, and total engine displacement to name a few. But its there.

What makes the sound more prevalent?
1. Cone or aftermarket air filter element.
2. Quiet exhaust (you know who you are)
3. Engine load at the start of the blip, which is affecting the intake pressure. i.e. driving at 50mph in 6th, the intake is likely near 1 atm, and thus has little or no vacuum so you will likely not hear a sound if you nail it. But at the same speed, if you let off the throttle, and the engine pulls a vacuum, then give it a large throttle input, you would be more likely to hear it. *assuming its louder than the air noise, engine sounds etc.
4. Intake runner baffling. Federal laws in many countries regulate the sound the intake can emit. Manufactures meet the requirements by placing noise canceling baffles in the intake of the vehicle. In the 430 they are between the intake in the fender and the air filter, just at the bend. And there are two in the base 430 USA model per side. Scuds have a different part number, as do other models, look at Ricambis site.
5. Modifications of the intake runner can be made to close baffles to intentionally increase said noise. This is what I did. I dont specifically want the suction sound, but I wanted the roar of the air getting pulled into the valves and through the long intake runners. It sounds magnificent. **Anzir noticed it on a short ride with me yesterday, after just driving his 430 (same year and model)

The baffling removes the air noise somewhat, but is tuned to remove the sounds generated by moving large amounts of air through the long intake runners and valves (think full throttle from 2-8k rpm in >2nd gear), not the brief suction sound. I happen to like the intake noise, so I increased mine by removing the baffling chambers which are designed to remove sound levels through destructive interference and sound division.

3 seconds sounds too long because of the volume of the intake. So maybe you have other issues. A video might be helpful.
