Thinking logically, You'd have to either get a custom crank or do significant machining due to the differences in how they mate to the transmission. There also may be similar issues with the blocks. The best bet would be to try to put the 360 top end on the 355 engine and not worry about the slightly longer stroke of thr 360 crank. This assumes the head bolt pattern is the same and the cam drive systems aren't radically different.

It'd be no small or easy project due to the transmission change from transverse to longitudinal.

Curt - You are totally correct.

The 360 is infinately more dependable and will cost less in maintenance. My only point was that not ALL 355s had valve guide issues and not all 355s are unreliable. The fact that 355s were so expensive to maintain meant that many buyers at the time managed to afford the car and then got blindsided by the maintenance costs meaning either they sold the car or deferred maintenance which is a contributing factor to the lore of 355s being a) undependable and b) extraordinarily expensive to maintain.

There are a lot of 355s out there (mine included) with significant miles on them that have had the "known" issues addressed and can be driven regularly without breaking down or having catastrophic issues. Comparing 355s to 360s the 360 will always win out from a performance, reliability and maintenance cost standpoint - you are 100% correct. BUT is someone truly is passionate about wanting a 355 they can indeed own one and enjoy the car - albeit needing more money in reserve and most likely with more trepidation around things going wrong versus a 360.

I think we are saying the same thing - perhaps I was not as articulate as I should have been.

Always appreciate you posts and input - Cheers!

A 355 with a 360 engine, your doing it all wrong, you need to start with a Rambler.

I just saw it on display last weekend, looked better than I imagined, it was commissioned by the owners of Warn Winchs here in Oregon who oddly enough owned Lamborghini of Portland which went out of business around 2009.

It is actually a fairly straight forward process. If you keep the 355 trans then a simple spacer plate and a crank extender would sort the mating process.

I agree though for the small increase in performance not really worth the hassle unless you already owned an engineless 355 and happened across a cheap 360 motor.

Upgrading to a 430 or 458 motor however would be the way to go, and exactly what I shall be doing in the next 12 months.

Stupid or not, one day I will put a 355 motor into a Mondial t, and only because the 3.4 motor was the last of the Mondial.

People who say derogatory things about the 355 typically have never owned one. I've driven one daily for years now and the thing has been as reliable as any German sports car I've ever owned.

They made over 16,000 360s so go buy one and watch your car's value plummet over the upcoming years as they made too many of them, they are not classicly styled like the 355 and they lack the driver feel of a 355. There are three times as many 360s for sale as there are 355s. Drive a 355 back to back to a 360 and the difference is radical. The manual transmission 355 is way more fun and direct than the 360 manual or F1 and the 355 sounds far better as well.

A couple of years ago I sold one of my 355s to a gentleman who proceeded to drive the car clear across the country back home...without incident...and claiming to have gotten better than 20 mpg on the motorway.

Exactly. If you do this sort of work drop in a 430 or 458 motor. In all instances you're stuck with plenums that are too tall. But at least with a 458 you've got a dramatic power increase.
