I'm looking for shops in NC that work with Can Am and Group B cars or generally anything campaigned in the early to mid 90's. Thanks!

Apex Vintage in Raleigh may be focused on cars a little bit older than that, but may be worth checking out.

    What type of car(s)?
Group B or CanAm didn't make it into the 90s. Just wondering.

Karl was a mechanic on the winning 962 team Brun-so he knows what he's talking about.

    European Road & Racing
Karl’s family moved to the United States in 1982. Karl was invited to work for BRUN Motorsport. While at Brun, Karl prepared a Porsche 962 for the IMSA Series.

Traveling the world he also prepared other 962s for WEC (World Endurance Championship). He and his fellow team members became World Champions at the end of the 1986 series in Fuji, Japan.

In 1998, Karl was hired by SVRA (Sportscar Vintage Racing Association). There he was given the opportunity to restore two Devin SS sports cars. (Only 14 were built.) One of these cars was featured in Road & Track Magazine, the other in Sports Car International.

In 1990, Karl opened his own automobile repair shop, European Road & Racing. He specializes in service, repair and high performance modifications, including race care preparation. Karl continues to pursue his passion and is still active as a crew member on IMSA and Grand Am racing teams. He’s currently crew chief on a two million dollar Porsche powered prototype that races in the Grand Am Series.

    These two are in Asheville:

Tom Coleman has the best looking shop I've seen in the area and has race experience having run TransAm-according to a recent conversation I had with him.

The Winning Collection - Premiere Auto Restoration and High-Performance Engineering

Ned Gallagher is the real deal. Lots of vintage stuff and I have seen a F40LM Recreation, XJR-!5, and Group C Group 44 Jaguars in his shop among many other important cars.

    1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 Berlinetta | Monterey 2012 | RM AUCTIONS

    From the RM write up.

In preparation for its offering, this car has recently been comprehensively evaluated and sorted by European sports car specialist Ned Gallaher, of Gallaher Restorations in Landrum, South Carolina. Well-known in the southeastern United States, Mr. Gallaher has been restoring collector cars since 1983, and his work has not only earned class awards at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, but he is the official mechanic of the annual Cobra tours organized by renowned automotive author Tom Cotter.

Robyn, my first cousin is married to Dave Handy at Sasco. She grew up around cars and racing her whole life via her dad's business, Passport Transport. Our fathers are identical twins.

I came to North Carolina via RJR Tobacco. She followed Dave here, after (I think) meeting during SVRA racing.

I think I know Robyn. I worked for Alex Quattlebaum before i started my shop. He owned SVRA. I know her dad ran cars and I remember seein the passport transporters.

    Karl

PS I'd say Sasco would be a great place to have a racecar maintained

Sasco has Can-Am experience. They have a T-70 Spyder, a T-70 Mk IIIB coupe, a Matich SR Can-Am and recently sold a McLaren M6B that was raced by the owners of the shop.

Tom Coleman is very, very good for the more modern cars (1986 on, Trans-Am, Can-Am, GTP, even historic F1).

Ned is fine for street cars.

I think Karl is primarily set up for seriously high end street cars and Apex is good for prod, GT and small displacement sports racing cars.

I really need to know exactly what kind of car you need preparation for to give a better recommendation.

Group B cars are very specialized vehicles, Ford RS200, Lancia Delta S4 and the Audis are all very trick and require specific knowledge.

Can-Am, particularly the two-seater cars (1974 and before), require a great deal of methodical inspection and tear-down to catch things before they break. You don't want them to break...

Here is a video of a Can-Am driver I recently worked with at Mont Tremblant. Shadow DN4. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10151569245393790&l=7742360212829104627

Here is a video of a Williams FW19 driver I recently worked with at Road America. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10151580020803790&l=7739778622419101617

Like I said, these are fast cars that need experienced hands going over them...

I prepped cars like these for twenty-five years before selling the shop now known as Apex Vintage almost seven years ago. It's important that you pick the right one.

True. AQIII bought SVRA from Ford Heacock in the late 1980's, then sold it to a group of owners that included Bob Pass in 1991, staying on as a part owner. They sold it to Peter McLaughlin in 1997 and Tony Parella just bought SVRA last fall.

AQIII and David Whiteside started Vintage Drivers Club of America in 1999 as a "retro-SVRA."

AQIV and his brother Scott are excellent drivers and I've had a lot of fun racing with them!

And to make both of us feel younger, it was about 25 years ago.
