A few of my humble contributions....

The in-car videos were shot with an iphone5 in a cheapo suction cup mount, the external one with a GoPro Hero2 using the built-in mic. I do really want to get a nice stereo remote mic to use with the GoPro. Should be able to capture much better sound that way.

As for best CAR sounds, the BRM V16 has to be way up at the top of any list.

I'm with you there. Pretty well predisposed against the 355 & not a huge fan of the 8 cylinder F-car contingent anyway.

As to babies? Must say I'd rather listen to harp seals being clubbed to death, and I'm fairly fond of letting seals live in peace.

Well here is my best sounds:

Any car: YOUR Ferrari - actually just saying "My Ferrari" is pretty great!

The car: Ferari 512S/ M ... just the right pich of low down torque sounds with screaming high end pitch... next followed by V-12 Ferrari GTO - check out goodwood revival videos on u tube .. just some nice sounds

expereinces: Formula one from the 60's - 70's you could tell the cars by the sound BEFORE you saw them... DFV, Matra, Ferrari, BRM, etc....

personal sound : "hi sweetie" - from my wife when I come home

ideal sound - moment: Rainy evening, good book and Bethoven's 9th symphony...

Great video! You had the car running in its sweet spot for power most of the video, so it was always sounding its best. I also always love the F355 ride along videos because you can practically live the driving experience just by listening to that great sound!

You did ask, and I hate to say that anything tops your F430, but this is one gorgeous sounding Mustang Cobra. The sound is so deep, smooth, and mellow. Not just at idle, but even the flybys are just amazing. While the Pagani and other screamers are intense and sound like the world is coming to an end, they are really harsh and unpleasant to hear constantly. (And anyone who says Porsches sound good at any speed need their ears checked!)

The 458 and any of the big Lambos are amazing under power in person, they absolutely blow you away on a flyby almost like a jet engine was passing by. The V8 Ferrari F430 and the lovely F355 in its peak power band (high RPMs) always sounds pleasant and perfect, but the startup and idle sound of them don't say much. But this Mustang Cobra sounds like a jazz band at all RPMS. Be sure to listen to the end with the flyby under hard accel to get the exhaust+blower duet:

The sound of a 365GTC/4 is the best automotive sound there is. But, even that does not beat the sound of my 72 Kawasaki H2 triple two-stroke engine.

They all sound at least as nice as most new Ferraris.

    +1 for the Carrera GT!

Also, the LF-A yet. That V10 bellow...

I believe Jalopnik posted a video of a 599XX Evo yesterday at full tilt. That sounded incredible as well.

One of my personal favorites - the F40 LM. You just can't beat the turbo noise paired with the screaming V8.

A few years ago I swapped my Lincoln Mark VII for a Corvair rebuild. The Mark had a 347 stroker and Kenney Bell Supercharge with a quite exhaust system. I spent more getting that thing quiet then any three guys getting their small blocks noisy

Anyway, he removed the crossover pipe and installed dual independed straight pipes with one or another performance muffler. I could not believe it. Its not hard to get noise out of a small block. But this sound was pure clear understated homicidal menace. I told him I would buy it back if ever he sold it.

That one I've heard once in person, and it was amazing.

Must say, in the "Victory by Design" with Alain de Cadenet, the sounds of the early 4-banger race cars certainly stir my soul as well!

the early years of the 3 liter formula for F-1....1966-1973 was REALLY special...

First trip to the Glen... i was several MILES from the track and said WTF was THAT shreik, the guys who were taking me(pit stwards from Sebring 12 hour and pit Marshalls from Daytona 24 hour races), just laughed...one said THAT was the "H-16"....then it was the Matra....at 14,500....Then several DFV Fords, and lastly-and most unmistakably, the shreik of the Ferrari...

Due to the 60 degree firing, there is an aucoustic advantage that ALL 12 cylinders have, the Matras had an odd nearly painful shreik a seemingly octave uprange from the FERRARI, however, the caucophony of ANY 16cyl is a sound to behold...a long, bygone era...

Having been arounf GTOS since they were 10-15,000...and LMs were even Less...and currently am a caretaker/giver for several "P" cars...WITHOUT QUESTION, for reasons none of us who ought to be able to explain it-but can't-the near unanimous choice for best sounding street motors is clearly the: 365 GTC/4...its nearly unanimous, as odd as it seems, yet it is obvious...

I did not use an external mic for the original video. I just put the GoPro as close to the engine as I could. Other folks have suggested the external but I have not tried it and suspect that the wire would be more of a bother.

Nothing like it. The smoldering growl of that V12 has not been duplicated anywhere.

I agree with the Cobra but can't say I'd agree on the Porsche.
