I live in Il and am also saddled with not only a bankrupt state, but also a lack of ethanol-free at the pumps...Last summer I discovered Marathon is marketing an ethanol-free fuel at many of their stations, especially near water-for boats...call around or Internet search Marathon "recreational fuel"... You may be pleasantly surprised
There is no simple answer. You have to run the car regularly. If you let todays gasoline sit, it will eat up everything including hoses. Ethanol will turn into a floating glob waiting to get sucked up into your filter and pump. As cheesey said, you can try Startron or Sta-bil from Westmarine or other marine stores. I use a cap of Marvel Mystery with a fill up. My outboard let me down a few months back after not running it for 3 months. The gas tank sat in the sun and the gas had a glob at the bottom. It would start then stall as it sucked the glob up. Had to open carb bowl, flush then replace with new gasoline in tank. Run the car....the only solution.
Wow, that is something I haven't heard since my father told me he used to do that with his cars back in the 1930's to 40's. It is interesting to hear someone still uses Marvel Mystery Oil that way. I never used it because I just assumed engines were quite different in those days and not really relevant for today's cars. I am very interested to hear why you use it and what benefit it gives you.
