A/C Compressor vs Engine Redline

    So here's a question: I know the engine is (hopefully) built to scream, but I'm guessing the A/C compressor maybe not so much. If I have the A/C on I tend to short-shift out of mechanical sympathy for the compressor. Any idea if that's a reasonable idea, or does everyone else just blast around as usual without any problems?

    I notice that mine will temporarily cut out (for just a couple seconds) when I go up to redline through the gears. But it always comes back to life.

    Will relate a story about my F355 and the AC. After a season of track driving the AC would log up the expansion nozel about once a year. After 5 years of this, I had the A/C rebuilt and the clogging went away, and stayed away for the last 5 years (success!).

    So I suspect that the over redline time had done something to the vanes/seals in the AC pump than would not fix itself until the pump was rebuilt.

    I was told by a Ferrari tech that the AC compressor will shut-off at high RPM in order to prevent extra stress on the engine. He wasn't sure at what RPM but thinks it is at over 5000 RPM. We drove my car to check this and it did kick out at over 5000RPM and came back on as he drove normally again.

    Pretty much all AC systems are designed to cut out at a set throttle position or RPM via microswitch, pressure switch or ECU management. Like when you accelerate onto a highway it will cut off to give more power and prevent to many RPMs on the compressor. I only tried the AC on my 355 never used it so I cant tell you exactly how it works.

    Thanks for all the answers. I didn't know about he 5000 RPM cut out. I'll probably still take it a little easier when the A/C is running... want to keep it happy and healthy.
