Probably the best quate about the scourge of blandness that affilcts sportscars today, despite their performance stats.

It was actually a game changer back then... The comfort and reliability (everyone browsing this thread knows that). But since then, now, every sportscar out there for sale today can do those things in addition to their differentiating attributes. A reliable supercar with superior comfort (or even tons of power) will not impress anyone anymore...

I don't think a great product can come out of expectations or trying too hard...

Maybe after the R8 (a modern NSX interpretation IMO) and the LFA (they canned their previous front-engine V10 naturally aspirated NSX concept) I think Honda thought they must bring something new to the table and thus went the electric motors attached to the wheels route instead... Porsche is far more powerful today than back then - they got all the bases covered and will not be outgunned so easily by Honda. Ferrari is also far more high-tech in their products today (what will stop Ferrari from letting the LaFerrari's hybrid tech trickle down to the 458 successor?).

And I don't think I have ever been waiting for a new car to be released this much...

Other than the BMW looks as ugly as heck, I don't know ... I'd say this car and the Alfa 4C has killed Honda wasting money making another NSX. Last time I looked I believe Honda was not rolling in money.

The Gentleman that just won 1/3 of the Powerball Lottery and $148 million said the first thing he is going to buy is the older model NSX he's been lusting
for months on Craigslist for $30,000.

It took $148 million for him to realize his dream. I hope you find yours in 2015 :)

Powerball winner's first purchase will be used Acura NSX off Craigslist - Autoblog

I really like the original NSX, but I don't think this car will follow in its foot steps. The awd, hybrid engine, just seems like it is going to take away from being a drivers car. I see the S2000 being closer to the original NSX than this, other than its mid engined. More GTR, which is an amazing car, but it doesn't pull me in.

I don't see the point of this car.

Does Ferrari help sell Fiats? I don't think so.

Does Lambo help sell Audi's? Not even remotely.

Did the LFA help sell more Lexus? Highly unlikely.

Will this help sell more Acura's?????????

What Acura should have done is sent it's design studio back to school. It would have been cheaper and much more profitable in the long run.

I agree Bob. The only thing this car has going for it would be that it's really the only car Acura has that isn't a rebadged Honda. At least Nissan and Toyota make some different models than their luxury counterparts, sport versions, rwd, etc. though Lexus is making all of its cars lol the same, I don't get that.
To me, the NSX is a halo car that isn't much of a halo. I'd rather have an S2000...

I think it will hurt McLaren most of all. The big advantage they will have is an extensive dealer network and excellent service reputation. The Acura could be the car for people who just don't want F or L cars and already have P cars.

If you don't want an F car and the L cars are too flamboyant, the Acura would be the "sensible super car", which is how the NSX was marketed.

Their problem will be performance stats. The numbers game now borders on ridiculous. If it comes up short of the Mac 12c or 458, it's just not going to get respect.

Then again, it may just expand the market for people who want an exotic but don't want exotic headaches.

Gen Y is entering this car mkt pretty much right now and they love the NSX. It's the car we tuned on Gran Turismo for years, the car that had super car looks but not super car prices, etc.

Re. i8, I actually made a thread on NSX 2 vs. i8 a short while ago.

It does not help Acura sell more Honda's, but it did establish (in my head at least) that Honda will build a world class supercar if they want to (like the Veyron for VAG).

Both are just subsidiaries aka Nissan/Infiniti. I never expected any of them to out perform their parent company in terms of sales. Keeping up with the Jones is not rational imho. Toyota should bring back the Supra in the same form but tweak the platform with todays advancements and the same goes for Acura and the NSX and for Nissan with both the 240Z and 300ZX-TT.

Old school is not "old fool".

I am going to question how well this whole genre of hybrid sportscars will sell. They are adding weight and besides accleration are reducing ultimate performance. Look at Lutz doing the chev V8 in the fisker karma. Does anybody spending 100k+ really care about 20 more mpg, in a sportscar. I mean either go full eelctric which isa form of extreme performance or full lightweigth gas.

I think that the manufacturers have fallen under the spell of eco weenies especialy in Europe, in the rest of the world no one really cares. Just think of stop start on you new SL, maybe its an idea in Europe not here.

The only upside I see is that to make the car light enough despite battery weight a lot of lech has gone into weight reduction. In a few years when the make a pure gas powered version these cars might be great. Just think of a I8 with the new tripple turbo M3 motor. That might actualy be something worth buying.

As to the NSX imagine it with a really powerful V6 and say 400 less lbs, might be great too.
As it is the R8 owns the market the NSX used to have, you know the useable everyday supercar, plus of course ferrari and porche make some pretty relaible hi perf cars these days too. So where does the NSX ft besides being just another supercar.

I mean in the 80's hi po cars were built like crap, the NSX was a game changer, now the game has changed. I just dont belive that hybrid sportscars are the next game changer.
Now we can argue that the elctrics add performance to say a 918, yeah maybe but its marginal and given the extreme performance avialbale today irrelevant except in a bar room brag.

What is needed is light sportscars with exceptional handling feedback and performance. You know lotus feedback, japanese build and reliablity, german soldity and german smooth motors. All the pieces are there, its just a matter of time till some company puts them together.

The more I think of it, an I8 body with the new M3 450hp tripple turbo motor would weigh what 2800lbs maybe less. What red blodded driver wouldnt want one.

As to the whole BMW I range and the NSX whats the point when you can have a tesla. The I cars lack range, and the whole hybrid thing makes no sense especialy now that a Tesla is out there with range.

I say go electric for most cars and extreme performance and work vehicles go gas.

Excellent post. We need a great modern car built for true car guys and not just brand snobs and number weenies.

The original NSX was certainly a better drivers car than its performance numbers would suggest. Acura didn't have enough street cred to appeal to those chasing after brand status. It was an amazing car that appealed to real car people. It pushed the envelope with its technology and refinement and forced other car makers to step up.

Ferrari makes amazing cars but the brand and the luggage it carries can get in the way of the automotive experience. How many Ferrari owners get a Ferrari just to get a Ferrari? I fear that for many, it is merely a trophy on the shelf to impress others.

The GT-R is all about the numbers. Hella fast but does not provide much passion. Kind of a clumsy thruster blessed with a 10" d**k.

I do not believe the new NSX will compare performance wise with the 458 or 12C. I think it will be a rung below like a slightly faster C4S. And while it will do some great things, I think it will be more about the numbers than about a drivers car.

We car enthusiasts who actually enjoy driving are a dying breed. The current generation are not into cars like we were and are, and we are now seeing this acted out by the manufacturers. They have to build these high tech cars because that is the future for geeks and er, enthusiasts of some description.

The day of the automobile for the pleasure and involvement of actually driving is over.

Just a few years ago I refused to accept this fact in pure denial, but now it's clear that it's a new area of flappy pedals, tons of gadgets and heavy turbocharged cars designed by EU directives and marketing surveys (we will never see the likes of a Lancia Stratos again!)...

I will probably end up with a longterm Caterham 7 sooner or later - that formula cannot get old for us who prefer simplicity; naturally aspirated engine, manual gearbox in the middle and RWD! That or an aircooled 911 customized to my personal taste to keep forever. Even an outdated, straight six M5 seems so much more tempting as a long time keeper than any of todays new offerings!
I can totally see why some of the older gents here are happy with their 308s and Countaches! Maybe you just love the era you grew up with best?

Come on Honda, don't lose a potential customer - I really want you to deliver...

I´m with you (older) guys on this. I can not even begin to muster any interest in this car given all the other options out there. But I would love to have a 2000 Kaiser Silver first gen NSX. When the first gen car came out, it WAS a game changer. And we all benefited from it.

I like the R8 and respect the GT-R numbers. But I fail to find any interest in this. Especially with the (thus far) non-descript looks I have seen.

The original will be hard to follow up.

Saw the live unveiling. Didn't like the exterior, the concept interior was far better and I don't think it will be anywhere near as special as the original. No thanks...
