I recently replaced a dead alternator, new belt, and battery. Then I read a post about a squeaky alternator belt tensioner bearing and now I can hear mine making noises. So I ordered the bearing from Ricambi, is this something that I can replace myself?

I replaced the alternator myself, so I know where the tensioner is...is it simply undoing the bolt that tightens the tensioner in place and the pulley will come off? Or is there more to it? Are any special tools needed? I know I'll need to go to a shop to press the new bearing in, but besides that is it a job that I can do?

If you changed the alternator yourself then you can certainly change the tensioner no problem.

    Assuming you are talking 355...
It takes a bit of fiddling because it is close to the X-member, but if you undo the 3 nuts on the bearing carrier, and remove the nut on the front of the tensioner you can jiggle the thing out.

Note that there are two types of tensioner, an early and late version. Make sure you get the right version. On the early version you can change just the bearing, reusing the tensioner roller. If I remember correctly, on the later version you need to change the whole thing.

After just putting my motor back in last week and getting 2 drives I thought I heard the alt. tensioner was making noise. I headed for home, only to not make it and had to have it towed home. Ends up not the alt. tensioner or the a/c compressor but a rod bearing making all of that noise!!! Sure wish it was the the alt tensioner bearing ! Lol!

We replaced this bearing for about $38. It's a universal bearing, but the mounting is Ferrari and needs some care in dissassembly. Bruce made me use a big hammer. :p Any DIYer can do this.

    A connecting rod bearing? Yikes.

Thanks. I haven't had a chance to replace it yet, but that may be a Tuesday project for me. Do I need to take the entire assembly off? Or can I just remove the bolt from the center of the pulley and remove the pulley? Where does the large hammer come into play?

Typically I start disassembling stuff only to realize that I took too much off for the job. I want to avoid doing that this time as this is my daily driver and would like to get it back on the road asap.

Afraid so.... Not confirmed yet, but pretty sure.

Grant, If you collapse the tensioner like this it will come out. then its easy to work with..

OK, so I need to remove the entire assembly. 3 bolts? I guess I'll find out when I crawl under there tomorrow.

    How does it collapse?

Pry bar against the cross member, with the nut on to push against. Once you get it pushed in a bit then take the nut off and gently push it till its like in my photo. Might take some wiggling but once it initially pops free it shouldn't be to bad.

Sorry I'm an idiot, I was posting for 355. 348 is a bit different. Been way to long for me to guess how that one cones out but it shouldn't be bad.
