Check engine light came on today in my 2002 575m. The error codes are P1187 and P1196. Both codes are for 'motor driven throttle'. Any ideas what these codes mean and how to fix them?

I was having some interior work done on the car and the battery was disconnected or the kill switch was shut-off. CEL came on after I picked up the car. Not sure if it is related or coincidental.

Do a run cycle and see if they extinguish. When you shut off the battery the Motronic DMEs go through a relearn cycle and things take a while to get back to normal, especially if no run cycle was done. Even if a run cycle was not done, everything will come back, but you do not want to get a smog check until stabilized and you may have to cycle things like the air conditioning on and off several times before it works properly.

Thanks. I am in the process of a run cycle. I forgot to clear the codes last night so i will power up, clear the codes, and then power down overnight followed by a run cycle tomorrow. I do suspect the codes are related to yesterday's work. Will update you on the results.

Alpine, +1 on Taz's post above.
When the 575 was new to me, I had these ghost codes appear occasionally after the battery switch had been cycled. I knew for certain on one occasion that I had rushed it and sure enough got a code. With a similar helpful post from Taz it quickly became apparent that the "start up procedure" is important. Since paying closer attention to it, the codes haven't returned. The procedure can be found in your manual and also through searching the forum.
I also pay closer attention to the actual start up procedure relative to key positions (also in the manual), spending several seconds in each key position before getting to the last position, starting the car.
My guess is that your problem is related to the battery switch and start up.

Bill- Affirmative, there are times when the battery needs to be shut off for maintenance and then a run cycle helps bring things back more quickly. Most of the pros do not recommend using the battery disconnect switch as a routine diagnostic procedure by owners, though, and leaving that to the pros. Can erase codes useful in diagnosing a problem.

In the OP's case, the codes would disappear even without a run cycle, it would just take a while.

Turned on the battery cut-off switch and scanned for fault codes. 3 new codes stored. Cleared them all and performed the run cycle with the ignition key. Engine fired up and ran very rough for ~ 10 minutes. The cooling fan kicked in and the rpm went up to 1200 then slowly dropped. Went out for a spin with 2 or 3 engine off / on cycles. No more codes. All is good (as predicted).

They did the same with my 550 after I had the fuel pumps gone thru.

It was interesting for me to watch, never knew about that.

    cheers,
