Who (if anyone) do you let drive your car?

I've never really seen anyone comment about who gets to drive their whip.
I let just about anyone drive my car. I love sitting next to people as their eyes light up when they go around corners, have people holler out "Magnum!", etc. at them. It is so much fun!

 

Family and friends without question, a couple of coworkers who travelled great distances to visit us, as well as a few neighbors after a spin with me first.

 

I have been known to let others drive my car but usually its people that I KNOW I can trust. A few coworkers and a few friends for example but always with me with them except for my friend Matt who kept running the car while I was gone to Afghanistan.

There are a few fchatters I would hand they keys to any time.

I let friends and family drive it (that I know aren't retarded). Like OP, I don't see the point in owning something like this if I cant share it. When I see a family taking pics next to it, I usually say "I have a better idea" and let the kids take a pic in the drivers seat. 6 years living in Hawaii got me a little more acquainted with the idea of "living with aloha." I think as a result I try to spread the love and make as many people's day as I can.

 

Both of my daughters drive it. My wife won't drive it but with good reason; she can barely see over the dash or depress the clutch (she's not THAT short - 5'1"). All (competent) relatives are fine. So few friends have constant practice with a 3 pedal car I don't really offer it and I figure they can buy their own toys anyway.

 

I let my 17 year old son pick which car he took to the prom.

that qualifies me as dad of the year.

most women that are 5'1" are really under 5', but either way that is short.

 

I wouldn't let anyone go near my GT4 (in the eighties) and made my GF take off her shoes to get in! Towards the end of my ownership, I relaxed and let a couple of my closest friends take it out.
I let anyone drive the QV - I remember the surprise on an acquaintance's face when he asked if I could take his 10 year old son for a drive, and I said "No. You take him for a drive." I bet they'll both remember that for a long time!
I did the camera thing with a kid when I had the Lotus Esprit Turbo - his eyes were on stalks when I told him to sit in while I grabbed his camera and took the photos!

 

Most people that can drive stick, really don't. I have let a couple of people drive the car since I got it but everyone of them seem to feel the need to slip the clutch on start-up instead of gradually modulate the clutch pedal. Since them, I don't have a need to let others "enjoy" the car anymore. My clutch thanks me.

Have had a couple of complete strangers walk up and expected me to just toss them the keys. Their Jedi mind tricks didn't work.

As for who gets to drive my car....

When I first got it I had a very good friend ask, I handed him the keys and he returned with the car over heating....It really pissed me off. I drove the car pretty hard and never had it over heat so I know he was hitting it hard.

Since then....no one has really asked and that's fine with me. Let them achieve it on their own.

I have tried to get my wife to drive it....you know, in case I break a leg or have a heart attack or something. She won't do it! She's afraid she says.

 

Broadly speaking, I apply the same rule as the one I applied 35 years ago with my records (I mean, music: vinyls, the good ol' LP 33 rpm): I accepted to lent these only to those people that would not lent me theirs. So I'm sure they would take good care of them.
For the cars, it means: real good friends only + wife + brother + sister (the elder one, yes; the younger one, mmmh: not so sure...).

I pretty much let anyone drive my car. When I purchased the car, I had my friend drive me down to pick it up, then threw him the keys and said "I get to drive it every day, so you take it". It's always fun to share the experience. I've always had the favor returned and driven friends Lambo's various Ferrari's including an f40 and been given a Rolls for the weekend to take my wife out for her birthday. Share in the fun

 

I let friends and family drive my car, a couple of times have watched it drive away with a friend at the wheel and his partner. Its a great way of capturing some of the magic of your very own first drive, even if you are looking at it from another angle.

 

My wife and my 15 year old niece - taught her to drive stick in the 308...

 

I enjoy sharing with other car club mates and anyone who I recognise as a real enthusiast. As far as joyrides - girls just have to ask nicely, guys have to wash the 308 first!

Nice country, Australia! Over here you would be liable for discrimination, for sure. And imagine myself doing the opposite (= guys only having to ask, girls having to wash the car...); they would put me in jail.

So far no one. But its early days. If the wife asks I'll say yes, she's been driving a stick since her first car a Triumph. But I don't think I'll offer it up quite yet.

 

The only others that have driven my baby was my cousin who is a Boxster owner, a lifelong buddy who has been into Fiats since we could drive. Wife is too scared , kids have no clue what the third pedal and funny stick does in a car. Question: would you teach your kid to drive stick in the Ferrari ?

 

I only let people drive my 308 that can afford to fix it if they break it.
