Recently I've had a couple people come up to me and ask me how I pronounce the name of my car. Is it a (3) syllable word "Mon-di-al" or a (2) syllable word "Mon-dial"?

I've always pronounced it as a (3) syllable word. But then I got to thinking, how do others pronounce it?

Of course some might suggest the addition of whether syllable one should be pronounced mon or mun (sorry can't write in phonetic to make it clearer) !

I too thought about "Mun" as in "Mundial". That's why I left the 3rd option in the poll.

I think Mike NAILED it with his online translation page and near the bottom of that page is an audible sound clip that clearly identifies it as a 3 syllable word. The French pronounce "Mon" as "Moon" so it would be MOON-DEE-AL.

LoL, I think most people screw up on the word FER-RA-RI. The ethnic way of saying these words are always different from the American saying. Take PORSCHE, is it Porsh or Por sha ?

Italians pronounce it: Ferrari pronunciation: How to pronounce Ferrari in French, Portuguese, Italian

Tee says it slightly differently but of course with the rolled rr. Also, the plural of Ferrari is Ferrari. I never know how to write it on FChat. "Check out those Ferrari." for my wife, or "Check out those Ferraris" for the 'mericans.

It depends...is there Grey Poupon involved? :D

Since I don't own one, I call it a "Porsh". If I ever buy one, I will probably call it "Por sha".

Not bad. Unfortunately, there were only (2) Ferrari (see that Dave, I didn't put an 's')!! There was a small group of Tifosi there cheering on the Scuderia. There were a couple of Alpha's and Ducati, as well as Fiat Abarth's. Food was great. I'd like to go back and try them out again during dinner.

I'll post the photos tomorrow in the Mid-Atlantic section. I was busy Sunday afternoon processing photos from Saturday's FChat Does Golf III event. Got home late last night so I didn't get a chance to work on them. :(

    Fantastico is pronounced 'fahn-TAH-stee-koh'.
It's the masculine form of the adjective. The feminine equivalent is 'fantastica', which is pronounced 'fahn-TAH-stee-kah'.

...and now you know the rest of the story... PH :)

The pronunciation link is how I say it. I'd break that down as:

MOON-dee-ahl - 3 syllables. He says "dee-ahl" quick, but it's still another syllable. Spoke French fluently at one point in my life (yes, it's mostly gone now as I'm American, but can understand and read it).

Let's not get started on "Modena" or "Moto Guzzi". :D:D:D:D

This is a great question, and one I wish I would have found long ago. Back in the day, in my naive' American way, I pronounced it "MON - die - ul", with emphasis on the MON and di -al like dial soap. I have since conformed to "Mon-dee-AL" with the emphasis on the last syllable.

An exchange student from Italy stayed with our neighbors for a week or so. I asked her to say mondial as pronounced in Italian.
MOAN-DEE-I'LL (with most emphasis on the last syllable) was her answer.
The I'LL as in "I'll be back".
    Sounded good to me.
