Ms was not sacked for kimi. He was told he could stay and race alongside him as equals or retire. Schumacher chose the latter. Ms was opposed to ferrari signing kimi but ldm ultimately calls the shots. That and there were rumors schumachers power had gotten too strong for ldm's liking so he needed to make sure everyone knew who the top dog was.

I am happy for Kimi and hope that Ferrari will build a quick car for next year.

Perhaps all true (and perhaps some semantics on my part), but LdM's "offer" to MS would be the textbook definition of aggressive behavior. My way or out. LdM KNEW MS wouldn't stay on with KR in the mix, yet LdM brought KR in anyway. And, at the end of the day, how did KR's stint with Ferrari go? Thus, LdM's driver decisions are in doubt. I assume he continues to have the backing of the Board, but, well, losing on track, alienating long-time customers, introducing debacles like the FF and so on eventually can catch up with even LdM.

This is what happens, however, when corporate bosses make decisions over the guys who are in the trenches (and the know), because they're concerned about their power and control within the company. I'm sure Domenicali was consulted, but, really, we've been down this road before. Perhaps a different direction is what the Scuderia needs to reinvigorate (and I don't disagree with sending Massa on his way), but I wouldn't be re-cycling drivers, either. The Scuderia can have its pick of the litter. THIS is what they come up with? Um, okay...

As said, let's hope for great maturity, enthusiasm, effort and results from him.

He stated that he would not move over only if he was going to win the race. He would follow orders if he was in a lower place. His quote ended with "what are they going to do, fire me for winning the race" or something like that.

I believe he said: they are not going to fire me for winning a race.

    Gotta love that!

I'm thinking along those lines as well Tom, Kimi is a great driver but his last season with the Scuderia saw him set many fastest laps AT THE END OF THE RACE when nobody really cared and displayed his casual attitude to the team

that is the problem, when he WANTED TO BE

I hope FA doesn't start the rumours re Kimi, that will destroy the SF quicker than anything else

+1...that's how I recall it went down. LdM's ego appears to be getting even more out of control as this latest move seems to be a preemptive strike vs Alonso. Of course, LdM may know something we don't about FA (i.e., he really DID meet with RBR) so he's just hedging his bets by having another driver he can use to solidfy the foundation in case FA does leave.

    Time will tell....

I remember when Ferrari was ruthless about drivers. they were expendable. then Phil was injured and was allowed to stay on until he fully recovered. He's still not 100% back yet and something had to be done.

Choosing Kimi is an attempt to show Fred and the fans Luca has got his mojo back.

Guess the fact that SF has not won a championship in the last several and it is dawned on Luca THIS lack of performance will be his legacy unless he turns things around real fast. He can't wait to build a rising star for the future.

    My $.02

Yes, but you have to think that in the Ferrari, Kimi would have added a few points. It is a reflexive proposition, not a static one.

    Like Vettel?

I guess they will want to follow team orders so they don't get booed for the rest of the season...

My bad! While that's what I wrote, that's not what I meant!.....

I think he always "wants" to be the quickest (don't they all?), but if he's not "comfortable" he loses focus, maybe?

Not just comfortable in the car, but with the whole mess - May be a weakness of his, but he's older now......

    Cheers,
    Ian

Some of the anti Kimi comments I've read on this thread are ridiculous. I would agree that Kimi is an enigma, but to judge his entire F1 career on an 18 month span from mid '08 when he was so unceremoniously removed from the Canadian GP by Hamilton to the end of '09 with the F60 . . . is just crazy.

Ferrari have nothing but to gain from this and if anything, I believe Kimi will help Alonso win the title at Ferrari.

    Not so fast.

Massa set all kinds of records while at Ferrari including most races without a win.

moving on . . . should Ferrari's '14 car prove competitive, Raikkonen will certainly podium more than Felipe managed since his accident . . . and I think he'll probably win as well. In the end, if Alonso can maintain the fight he's displayed over the past four seasons he'll no longer be fighting alone . . . which is the key point here.

I wondered when the last time the Scuderia had two WDC F1 drivers competing against each other.

1952 they had two recognized WDC drivers, Farina (1950; Alfa) and Ascari (1952 & 1953; Ferrari)

1953 and 1954 they also had two recognized WDC drivers, Farina (1950; Alfa) and Ascari (1952 & 1953; Ferrari) and one yet to be crowned Hawthorn (1958; Ferrari)

1955 Farina and yet to be crowned, Hawthorn

Of note when Fangio was with Ferrari in 1956 he was the only WDC driver.

1958 Hawthorn and yet to be crowned Hill (1961; Ferrari)

    1990 Prost (1985, 1986, 1989, 1993) and yet to be crowned Mansell (1992; Williams)

    2014 Kimi (2007; Ferrari) and Alonzo (2005 & 2006; Renault)

In terms of becoming WDC with Ferrari competing against a WDC teammate, it looks like it happened in 1952 and 1953 when Ascari was WDC with Ferrari and had Farina as a WDC teammate.
Hawthorn was WDC with Ferrari the year he had a would be WDC teammate (Hill).
Hill, Surtees, Lauda, Scheckter and Schumacher and Kimi did not have WDC teammates the year(s) they were WDC with Ferrari.

(from what I can tell, may be errors...)
