    The answer: Nothing good.

A little mishap at the Garden State show. Not my car thankfully.

Cars were parked in a lot and the lot was pitched with one side of spaces higher than the other. Cars were parked on both sides. Judging included starting the car and idling. In this case the yellow car was on the high side and most likely left the car in neutral with the hand brake on only.

After a good period of time, like 30 minutes or more, it appears as if the brake slipped and yellow car slid down the pitch into the red one. Someone physically tried to stop it but wasn't able and stepped away.

I didn't see it happen and my car was parked next to this red GTS that got hit.

Both parties were very cordial and I 'm sure it will be handled correctly.

Lesson: Put your car in gear and don't rely on the brake only.

One row of the lot. There was another row like this and another section with vintage Ferraris.

Well attended event. Only 4 355s present and about the same 348s

Ouch, but thankfully the damage appears to be minimal.

The parking brake can slip because it wasn't adjusted properly in th first place. You can pull the handled all the way up, hear the clicks, and let the handle down thinking it's set. But internally the brake shoes aren't putting enough pressure, or any pressure at all, on the inside of the brake drum (actually the inner part of the rear rotor for the parking brake).

I recently read in Forza I think that one of the main weak points of the 355 is the parking brake design. Not a reliable design and it requires way too much fiddling and adjustment to even work minimally.

Is there a DIY/simple fix for this? It happened to me once, but thankfully I caught it in time and no damage.

I use wheel chocks along with the parking brake if I have the car idling and even on a slight incline. Sometime on a steep incline even though I have it in gear and parking brake set, I also use the wheel chocks. The parking brake is adjusted better now than before, but I still don't trust it.

Once I was talking with my neighbor while the car was idling in my driveway and the parking brake slipped and the car slowly rolled backwards. I caught it in time...

Is this known to happen usually when the car is on and idling?

Kind of, because most people leave it in gear when they shut it off so it stays put if the e-brake works or not. When they leave it idling it's out of gear and reliant on only the parking brake to keep it in place. So obviously things are most likely to happen when the car is unattended and out of gear. I don't know if at that point idling or off would matter.

The cars isn't in gear when idling in neutral, so more of a chance for the parking brake to slip. Don't know if idling motor vibration can help along the slippage... anything is possible.

Numerous threads on adjustment. Not that hard either.

Once set up right, I think it is one of the most secure e-brake systems around. Full drum brakes in the rear. Pretty nice stuff.

Mine did not work at all when I got it. A few hours later I had them all set. They have worked fine for the past three years...and my driveway has a 5 degree incline.
