I need to adjust the oil pressure on the run stand and wanted to know what the correct values should be. I have some deviating information as to whether to set the pressure cold or hot and also at what RPM / pressure value I should take my measurements at. Of course the engine is out of the car on a run stand so I do not want to put it through high rpm without load.

From the information I have, normal oil pressure should not drop below 75psi or exceed 100psi AT 7800rpm and oil temp at 110C

This is the dilemma as to set the max pressure you need to rev the engine to its max rpm so the "upper limit" is set. Setting the oil pressure to high at low RPM, you will risk blowing seals gaskets etc. when going to higher rpm later on.

Obviously you don't want to do that because the engine isn't run in yet. When I did my engine a few years ago I set the oil pressure when the engine was running in at 4000rpm to 70psi and checked it once it was fully run in much later.

Running in engines is a hot topic and one I will not get involved in as there are so many views.

In any event DO NOT DO THIS

Rob, can't your engine builder advise based on the type of run-in oil, engine tolerances etc?

Tony That really made me smile.
I remember firing up my old TVR after spending months rebuilding and upgrading the engine. I fitted stainless manifolds. Scared the hell out of me when they started to glow. Kevin

    Rob,

I found that it wasn't as critical as first thought. After a thorough warm up I held the rpm at 3000 rpm to measure and adjust the pressure. It appears to be working fine so far.

I also wouldn't take it to the redline on the stand either and I don't believe that it is necessary.

Cool video but that's one reason why I now wear 2 hearing aids.
