Had my mags refinished in late 2011 and they came out looking great.

I still have the Ferrari original brake pads so my wheels get a lot of brake dust. I clean the car regularly and use water-diluted simple green when it's time for a deeper cleaning (1-2 times a year)

I also use the Armor All wheel protectant which really helps keep the brake dust from sticking to the mag and significantly extends the amount of time they stay clean.

Lately I noticed weird stains which seem embedded under the clear coat which is so annoying. I tried scrubbing but it makes zero difference, the stain seems buried under the clear.

    Anyone else have this problem?

Would need to know exactly what the refinish process was. Procedures / chemicals.
Pigment deviation under the clear for sure.

I don't think it is under the clear. I think it is staining from the brake dust affecting the clear coat. There used to be a very strong wheel cleaner from BMW of 10 years ago. You spray it on, hose it off, and brand new wheels again. They don't make that stuff anymore and I have never been able to find the same level of performance with a dozen other brands I tried.

The Sonax looks like the same as Griots garage and that Griot stuff does not work.

I clean the wheels on al my cars with a 50/50 solution of Ace Industrially degreaser and water. I spray it on, let it sit for a few minutes, spray once more, then hit the wheels with my Home Depot $99 pressure washer. After that I wax the wheels. Between cleanings/waxing I use an old California Duster to get off the break dust. Never found a commercial wheel cleaning product the worked worth squat.

The Sonax and P-21S are the products that have worked the best for me over the years. I have always been reluctant to use the real strong stuff because it can damage the clear coat. There is a really strong cleaner that I do use on the inside of dirty wheels when I take them off to clean called Brown Royal Wheel Cleaner and it does go after the heavy stuff (works real good on the rubber floor mats in the SUV also). My Vette buddies really like the Brown stuff and that is how I found out about it.
