So I assume you don't frequent their establishments and the issue is strictly academic.

It was bound to happen sooner or later. No drama. Biggest problem is the 10 place grid penalty which is harsh. A fine and a reprimand would have been enough, but thanks to maldonado continuosly misbehaving a couple of years ago, the fia introduced this new political weapon. What happens outside races should not influence them and 10 places is way too many anyway.

Err. He GOT a reprimand. The problem is that it's his 3rd (!!!) and THAT'S why he has a penalty.

Seems business as usual to me. I might pay $8K - $10K for a major service plus incidentals, but no way in hell am I accepting their offer of a ride home when I drop off the car.

    I'm not made of money.

Yes but iirc this new three reprimands = 10 grid penalty rule has been introduced a couple of years ago after all the unpunished reprimands Maldonado accumulated in the same season. It's just not fair every one should be dealt with separately. Just another way of rigging a championship. Also note cry baby hamilton who straight away made it look as a tragedy.

This is why the service at restaurants in other countries is crap. They don't have to "work" for their paycheck so why bother.

That is a blanket statement, and as so is not correct.

Service can be good or bad anywhere, regardless of whether staff wages are being subsidized with tipping IMO.

In fact my experiences in the states with service, is that it almost feels false, and I have experienced the real face of service when it goes wrong.

States' service is lame...I get way better in Asia and tip isn't even required or expected! Here if I don't leave a tip they'll probably flag me down and won't let me leave the restaurant.

And not sure about everyone else, but in sf there's also a 3-7% surcharge for "health tax" which goes towards the waiters' health benefits.

    You are correct.

However in my personal experience travelling all through Italy (we all spoke Italian) I only had 1 favorable experience in the 2 weeks we were there. Everyone at restaurants treated us like they were doing us a favor by letting us eat there.

In many chain restaurants here the waiter's spiel is scripted.

In my experience good service is often not only not appreciated, it's not even recognized. I've been in many many places where the waitstaff was of a higher caliber than the patrons.

Well, that's strange to me; at least it does not mirror my own experience.
It is exactly what I would say for the service in french restaurants as a general perspective, but going once or twice in Italy each year (usually for business, usually in the North, mostly Milano) I am always pleased at the kindness of the service, and always says to myself: I wish the french service could be of that order.

In our time in Alsace and Paris last year we had none of the famous poor service.

I wonder what we did wrong?

Nothing, probably; poor service is the usual norm, but not always. But next time you're over there, I should do my best to have you encounter really poor service...
Alsace is different, but I am biased on that subject.
Bottom line is that you were in Paris, were I work, and in Alsace, when I have frequent drives with either my 328 GTB or the 328 GTS (last one was exactly ten days ago, in the north of Alsace, with the GTS, but it rained too much); and we managed not to meet...that's really poor service from my part!

    We will try again.

If I have to try multiple times I will make that sacrifice.
    ;)

We were late for a dinner reservation at Le Tallivent one night due to an errant cab driver. I didn't know how we'd be received when we finally arrived. In NYC we might have been turned away.
Needn't have worried. The maître d was gracious and apologetic for our inconvenience. After a lovely meal the captain arrived at the table with a bottle of cognac and three glasses. As he put them down in succession he says "one for Madame, one for you and one for the cab driver".

    Typical lousy french service.
    ;)

    David,

Usually in Paris the restaurants are not very strict on customers being right on time, because traffic makes it difficult to respect your schedules, and besides, it is customary to arrive slightly late in Paris: it is seen as a symbol of parisian life, and called "le quart d'heure parisien" (the parisian quart of an hour).
Being late would create more problems in any town outside Paris (except famous restaurants) because usually the kitchens are closed after 21:00, so if you are late, too bad.

I'm out of topic (not by much) but this is my 80515 ten days ago, in the most north-western part of Alsace; Autumn came early this year. Seems to be the middle of nowhere, and actually it is; but in that nowhere land there is a famous restaurant in the village just nearby, called "le Cheval Blanc": so good that Francois Mitterrand invited Helmut Kohl here during the eighties...(the german border is just a mile from there)

Thanks for the context. We were pleasantly surprised in any case.
Alsace is lovely and I wish we'd spent more than one night but the mrs had her sights set on Paris. And it was HER wedding anniversary after all.
    ;)

    Edit:

Oh, sweet ride you've got there.

I must say i have no complaints about the service..neither in france nor in Italy.
Usually in Portugal you are very well treated in restaurants, and i also can´t complain about Spain...obviously you´re going to encounter a poor service once in a while but most of times i feel welcome and well served. Cna´t speak for the states or england, never been there!!

We've spend some time in Barbados and the service is almost universally relaxed but pleasant. The one exception is a place that effects a NYC vibe. They go out of their way to be brusque but can't really pull it off.

Gorgeous car! Usually F-cars should be red, for the most part, but to me, if there was
another colour, it would be black. Brilliant.

Thanks; she is actually "nero metalizatto" (= Black Metallic) or Nero Fer 901/C; leather is Gray (with the "extended leather" option around the rear window and the roof liner), carpets are black.
Its twin sister, the GTB, is Red (Tan leather, castoro carpets)
