10-15 minute warm up is a must!

Dave- I have an F1 and no way is she going to waste time and gas with a 15 minute warm-up. As soon as the high idle comes down (time varies with temperature), she is ready to go and is driven gently with revs below 4000 (like the OM says) until oil temperature reaches 70C/158F. Then cleared hot because all the parts are warmed up, not just the lumps attached to the engine.

If your F1 system is not working well when cold, suggest you have your techs flush and bleed the system and put in new synthetic automatic transmission fluid meeting Dexron III standards, which is what the recommended Shell Donax TX is.

Early F1 systems, through the early 612, have no recommendation for F1 system fluid change. Ferrari learned over the years, however, and on the 599 began recommending every 3 years for a complete F1 fluid change. Just like there is no recommendation in your maintenance schedule for a coolant change, but most (hopefully all) of us change it every 2-3 years, some (like Brian Crall) annually.

 

Is the f1 pump operating the whole time of warm-up?
If not, how does the fluid "warm"?
Alternatively, what is warming in the f1 system where warmth is important?

I think it's important to do whatever works for you, and ignore some of the "experts" on here. Otherwise, no one would ever buy a 355.
I honestly think the endless whining about every ****ing little issue has a fair bit to do with the ridiculously low prices of these amazing cars in your country.

A good 355 is well over $130k here. As they should be.

Here is the detailed explanation:

There are three important facts at play:
1. The byproducts at cold operation are harmful.
2. Combustion is usually more efficient and complete at peak VE (torque peak) and worse at the ends of the rpm range.
3. If you let the car warm up at idle, it takes longer to warm up than if you drive it.

Here is where the logic part comes in.

If the car takes longer to warm up (3), the oil will be exposed to more (2) harmful contaminants (1) for a longer period of time, therefore the oil will become more contaminated.

Is that detailed enough?

 

I find just starting the car no matter what the temps outside is very hard on the engine period. That is why I lift my car on the hoist before starting it and take a blow torch to the oil pan for about 10 to 20 minutes to warm the oil up. This will cause less damage upon initial start up as the oil is thinner when warmed. But if you find this a bit too much, just go with what Rob said as that is the best way especially if you don't have a hoist.

 

Ettore Bugatti is said to have replyed to a customer who complained that his car was hard to start on cold mornings, that if you could afford his cars you could afford a heated garage.

I've said it before (and I'll probably say it again) but you guys are REALLY fortunate to be able to buy one of these amazing cars for so little money. Although it does seem you get badly ripped off when it comes to servicing etc.

 

No kidding. I was just reading a UK article on servicing costs for F355 and they were half what most US posters are talking about!

I always warm my car up for +/- 10 mins.. It CLEARLY drives better and i dont constantly think i shredding metal on metal in an oil-less engine lol
