Not for a second did I intend to change anyone's view - I shared my experience, that is all. I've now said that at least 5 times in this thread.
sorry to say to this, consider me a troll or whatever you want but i assume you own and run this site....very well...this is the first site i open day in day out because of my love and passion for cars and Ferraris as a whole....but you Mr. Lay, acting and behaving like God (in a little bit childish manner if I would add), just because you own this site, is totally unprofessional and unethical.. I have seen you defend and go all out for your sponsors even when they are clearly in the wrong (let's not forget the Fabspeed fiasco where you were clearly biased).....yeah ban me as a user for all i care....but i don't think Dave was out of line.....he mentioned something which he thought made his car better..it could have been right or wrong.. HOWEVER having read this thread, i understand the side effect of the acid build up, etc and might not do so (15 min idle warm up) in the future..so Dave's view on this could have been not entirely accurate...that's freaking why it's called a forum....i'v learnt loads from here by not just reading one Correct or right reply to each question i had "searched" or asked for...it's a collective thing of multiple replies and experiences...that's how a forum works...collectiveness... ..however that's besides the fact....i have noticed a pattern of you belittling members (esp those who don't sign up.....however don't forget, we patronize your sponsors, without whom this site is nothing!) very very unprofessional of you....now you can ban me if you want.... bk
it would help me making a professional reply if I knew your complete background previously banned id's etc that make you so mad at the world.
My 348 consistently idles a bit high, even after an ECM reset. I've noticed if I let it idle for 5-10 min (while I'm taking the top off....putting my fancy driving gloves on..) the idle settles down faster for the remainder of the day. That can't be too bad of a thing.
He does not seem the least bit angry to me, I think his post is spot on and take note to the fact he does not agree with me yet I agree with what he has said here...
I would check for vacuum leak that usually manifests itself by the idle being higher than nominal. Cheap and easy way would be to listen with a piece of rubber hose around the engine. Now why warm-up time affects this beats me but I would think some "false" air is a source of your idle issue.
I don't over protect sponsors, anyone that has been around awhile can attest to that, even the Fabspeed situation if you look at why I did everything and when. Now another story is how I treat commercial spammers and shills. I'm those guys worst nightmare. I do have shortcomings letting my participation as user and admin cross. I also take anything negative against FerrariChat personally and WILL go to war. Chuck Norris has thus banned me starting 10 pm next two nights lasting 18 hours.
I really must be a fool to post in this thread again but....... Yesterday was my first drive since the start of this thread. I idled the car for exactly 5 minutes before taking off. The results were very good, not as good as the longer warm up but I estimate 90% as good. Next time I'll try 10 minutes although I'm pleased with the results of 5 and will use that as my minimum going forward.
Of course 5 minute idle won't have your car as warm as 10 minute idle. There is still plenty of warming up required after 5 minutes. Just a question if you finish warmup driving slowly or not. The test should be 10 minute idle vs. 5 minute idle/5-10 minute slow. After each test note water temps, oil temps, tire temps, brake temps, steering feel, and I guess how the F1 feels.
IIRC, water temp was about 180. Don't know the oil temp but I do know what time the stupid clock had since Ferrari thought eliminating the oil temp gauge was a better idea ;-) I certainly did not check tire or break temps coz they would be room temp (not moving) To me, let me stress ME again, this is all about how the car runs and the idle warm up really helps but it's also clear that 10-15 minutes as I originally posted is better but not really enough to justify
that's my point too, "car" is a complete set of systems, many that need to be warmed up, not just F1. we already know each others positions on this by now though.
Rob, I'm talking about the difference between start and drive or start, idle for 5 then drive. I'm not at all talking about what happens after drive, you are. This was all about cold start verse warm start. You keep viewing this like a race scenario, I'm talking about a SOP.
I never mentioned race, I'm talking about SOP too. A car is made up of many systems that need to be properly warmed up. Properly means not allowing one thing to be too hot and another too cold. SOP should be a balanced healthy warmup for all systems. watch the NFL pregames today and let me know if they just stretch their arms for warmup. I bet they do some light stretching in place and then some slow jogging before going all out.
With an F1 you're never going to know oil temp (which is a crying shame), but I reckon the more important thing is how you drive the car for the first 5 or 10 minutes. I always start the car and let it idle for around 5 minutes (give or take a minute) but I then don't let the revs get over 4k until I've driven it for at least another 5 minutes. By then it is properly warmed up and is ready for some more spirited driving. As am I! I can't imagine any F355 owner starting up their car cold and immediately driving off, flogging it in every gear. If there are any, I'd be avoiding their car like the plague. The virtue of a 15 minute warm up - who knows? I've never tried it. But my F1 seems to work just fine if I follow the procedure above.
Since temperature is the theme of the thread, I have a related question. My oil temp seems normal regardless of ambient temp: about 200 when fully warmed up and you have to wear a glove to check the dip stick: seems pretty hot. However , the water temp never seems to get above 150 when ambient temp is less than 60 and heater doesn't blow particularly hot at that temp. Do I have a thermostat problem?
Took me a good 3-4 min in the driveway & 7 hwy miles Sunday before the oil got to temp. It was really cold here 55-60 degrees. Need to go to my winter oil
Oh I do hope not. Starting leads to running and that often leads to driving which, as we all know, is the best way to wear out a car.
Here is what I am taking away from this. Everyone agrees with you!!! The difference is letting it warm up sitting or driving. Most want to drive while it's getting warm.
exactly, a cold car isn't going to feel good no matter what, but I thought that was obvious. who drives a car cold and expects it to perform? maybe Dave did because he wasn't happy with performance of the car after his prior technique. the debate is just whether those other things like tires, brakes, suspension, bearings, and driver are that important. my entire proposition in this thread is that they're pretty important too and evidently a couple people disagree.
