I am in the process of purchasing a 98 355 GTS F1. The car had a major service done in 2007 and since then had 1300 miles put on it. Currently has 17k+ miles. The dealer is telling me it needs a header replacement but not an engine out major service. He detected a ticking sound and said one of the heads had a leak. I could weld or replace. Some questions I have are since the last major was done in 2007 and its past its 5 years what's the consensus on major service? Is it based on yrs or mileage? Also, with the headers leaking is there any other potential damage to the motor block? If I pull the trigger on the car I most likely will replace the headers. Any help Appreciated since this is my first Ferrari!

    Thanks Much!!!

    I own a 98 F1 GTS.

Ferrari now states cam belts every 3 years regardless of miles, however most dealers will tell you 4-5 years is fine.

The car does need a major, no doubt at all. I suggest you insist that it be done as part of the purchase and be sure a reputable shop will do the work.

Be sure to insist on a compression and leak down test as well as a fix to any and all issues found when the motor is out.
