Advice for Ferrari from Permane at Lotus-

Permane and some on here seem to overlook that the rules change is not just about different engines. The aero side is attacked as well. Red Bull/Newey are the aero masters. Take a chunk out of the aero package and I assume those who rely the most on it will also suffer the most. So I'm not so sure RB/Newey will still have such a big advantage next year. If they do, Ferrari needs to work harder.

 

Can't make that comparison at all. Rory's duties were minimal at best, he was basically retired. Now, word is he's a more integral part of the design.

 

I sincerely hope that proves to be successful. I'm tired of the RBR domination, but so far nobody's proven to be Newey's equal in this era of F1.

 

The RB organization seems to be the best run and most productive. That will carry over.
A new set of rules does present the best opportunity for other teams to catch up but they'll be at a disadvantage from the getgo.
That being said no team stays on top forever.

 

The main point is just as you mentioned as it is a "perceived advantage". I do not expect RB to be so dominant next year simply because the chassis will be new too accommodate the new engine. Newey is a genius but "proof is in the pudding".

once ferrari figures it out vettel will jump ship and move to ferrari and win more championships. i never though schumacher's title count never be beaten but now it seems almost a certainty.

ferrari have just a good as chance as anyone next year and they do have the strongest driver lineup. i dont think anyone can argue with that. we'll see what happens.

 

Excellent point - and worth noting that Newey isn't just the master, he's the quickest at adapting to new regulations. Frequently, when there are significant aero changes, it's Newey who produces the fastest car out of the box. Examples are the 1998 McLaren with the intro of grooved tires and narrower chassis etc, when Hakkinen walked away with the title that year; and 2009 when slick tires were brought back, front wings got huge, rear wings got narrow, etc, and only the gray area double diffuser prevented the Newey RB car from winning (Newey had thought the double diffuser would be illegal, and his rear suspension design limited the effectiveness of adapting a double diffuser later). Aside from the double diffuser cars, the RB was the fastest car under the new regs again.

So for 2014 with significantly revised aero regs, I would fully expect that the RB designed by Newey will have the best aero package out of the box.

 

Newey and RBR will be hard to beat, just like before. But it doesn't mean that everyone else should just throw in the towel and call it a day. It is up to the other teams to find the next great designer/tech director that can beat Newey and RBR. If this is really how the people at Genii team feels, then they should just either sell the team or fold up their operation and go home for good.

Obviously Red Bull will be fast, we're not arguing that. But these jokers act like everyone should just fold the tents and go home because there is no chance or something.

 

I don't know anyone who believes that.

You're not getting my point. I'm sure Permane isn't dumb, but his comments are extremely dumb and defeatist.

Won't even be close, eh Alan? You mean like the two times Fernando lost the WDC by a combined 7 points despite the Red Bull being the far superior car both years? I'd consider that "close." Plus, Ferrari have got Byrne working on the car, Kimi in the other seat, and the cars will be totally different! The team that might be in real trouble is Lotus considering their lack of money and loss of a talented driver so perhaps he should worry about himself before preaching about Ferrari's future.

 

His comments smack of desperation and recrimination.

 

Exactly. I suspect there is some serious bad blood at Lotus over Kimi's departure. They are probably bitter that Ferrari and the Tifosi are excited. Why else would he single out Ferrari like that?
