I am going to surprise my wife with a vacation from our winter wonder land to LA for Valentines day weekend. My plan is to drive up the coast to our friend's house in San Fran and then back. I plan to do this over 4 days or so. I do not want to spend thousands renting a Ferrari for 4 days, but I want to drive the coast in a Ferrari. Is there a place that rents older Ferraris for less? I'm trying to think outside the box. Do you guys have any ideas? No kit cars unless it is a Bugatti made from a prius.

There is a very good chance that your wife is not going to enjoy driving the coast in a Ferrari. Personally, I'd rent a comfortable car and have a nice time.

Very expensive. Just get a convertible of some sort.

Alright. I kind of expected it to be expensive. If you guys do not know of anyway to get one for a good deal then there is no way to do it. You have to try right? Thanks

Obviously you want this to be "special" for both you and the wifey. I'm not sure what kind of cars you have back home, but two options that would still be very nice, but these are all rentable from Hertz and fully reservable at LAX:

    - Volvo C70 Convertible
    - Mercedes E350 Cabriolet
    - Mercedes SLK250 (the new one)
    - Chevy Camaro SS Convertible
    - Porsche Boxster (981)
    - BMW M3 Convertible

This will all be significantly less expensive than a Ferrari and probably a bit more comfortable over hundreds of miles.

Reserve a Chiropractor for when you arrive in SF.

There is a service on Wilshire in Beverly Hills, just off Santa Monica. It is just across the street from the Starbucks right there. I can't remember the name, but my son wanted to know about Ferraris. The cost on the 458 was $5,000 for 8 hours plus $15 per mile, and you had a pretty big security deposit.

HAHAHA! That could get pricey driving the coast. Thanks for the reality check. I will probably just check with Hertz.

B&W and a number of other outfits rent 458s for roughly $2k per day,Californias at less then $1.5k.
Everything is negotiable, recommend California and haggle about the price (you should be able to get it closer to a $1k per day.
Your best compromise would be the new 911 Carrera S Cab,you could enjoy it and your wife wouldn't complain either,at roughly $500 a day.

It was a brand new 458 Spyder, and the hottest thing going. The McL was about $2000 per day and $15 per mile.

You need a new wife...my wife would LOVE it (and she actually does, she prefers my 360 over our other cars for long distance trips).

    Spider is now between $2200-$2300.
When they came out the charge was $2500 at BH and B&W.

    Fat Tire- wait!

Your talking about my neck of the woods here. First: realize this is California coasts winter,
This mean you have a greater than %70 chance of driving up in an incredible storm.. Second: this is a two lane highway which is one of the most famous roads in the world, that means no matter what storm conditions exisit you will have traffic. The most famous section is the 40 mile section heading north from San Simion to the Big Sur coast, most of this road is very twisty, complicating the passing of slower cars. I just drove most of the road last summer, once I got around one motor home within a short distance I had another.
Then another.....It's fun but not relaxing!
Also, consider stopping in Big Sur for the night, stay at the Vantana Inn, or Post Ranch Inn, or stay at Esalem retreat, get massages there! Really look it up, Soak in their hot tub on the edge, really its on a cliff, of the Pacific Ocean.
Also a 450hp Ferrari is a lot of car for this stretch of road, I understand your desire, I really do, but consider a Porsche boxer! If you really want a car experience its a better car for this particular road.
Also when in SF check out my restaurant Foreign Cinema, if your friends live in SF than they know my place.
    Good luck

Jonack your the man. Thanks for the advice. I was wanting to ask if there were any must stops along the way, but I was afraid to hijack my own thread with non Ferrari questions.

I might have to go with a non Porsche. Only reason being is my San Fran friend was just here this past weekend picking up his 911 turbo (lucky bastard) that is being shipped to his place. I will have to put the heckles aside and look into the boxer. Like I said thanks for the input.

    Don't rent a Ferrari. The 3 F's don't include it.:)

I am pretty sure that Gotham Dream Cars rents out there now. I'd check them out. But you still need a good budget.
