I think +\- 10% is a pretty typical loss from crank to wheels...

+1, at 7k rpm at the wheels, try 18-20% depending on how much the wheels/tires weigh

    +1 i reckon its also 17-20%

260whp stock is a strong motor...despite running on an non-load bearing dynojet

I never realized these had such a low HP output, a 348 was the first Ferrari I was in. Dyno jets also read a bit high

I had just completed my DIY major with this car. I was very happy to hear we had done something right.

I am getting the itch to start playing with some of the stooges intake mods.

Are there any pics of these new 4-1 348 manifolds?

These power outputs are very much indicative of flywheel bhp being what was advertised by Ferrari or greater. 271bhp at the wheels on a dynojet is right around 330bhp at the flywheel.

I know dynojets well now and I trust the % losses on a dynojet to be more clear when translating from flywheel bhp than that of a Mustang dyno which always reads a good 5%+ lower. To give you an idea, I know very well of a 308 rally prepped engine which made 307bhp at the flywheel and then put down 249bhp at the wheels, on a dynojet. Quite a bit is lost through the drivetrain.

Chris also told me, they picked up an additional 9-10 hp by using the bypass test pipes. That puts the 348 in 355 hp territory

    Do it!

Have RobZ port your throttle bodies. DeeGee and I did some back to back dyno tests on his car, and my ported TBs were good for +4hp to the hubs. Getting the the intake runners ported is good for another +3 to +5hp.

Well, I did say +\-, just not how much :)

I agree, though, that 260 is not bad. Didn't realize there is that much variation among dynos or that Ferrari would ever tell a fib. :)

This happens ALL the time, no two dynos will read exactly the same. I prefer it when manufactures underrate the cars which unfortunately doesn't happen these days very often. I think that the 260-280whp range is very respectable for a 348 which is now what, 20 years old?!

    Say Evan,

When you guys are done with the exhaust mods, how about a comparison between the 348 vs 355 with similar mods?

    Inquiring minds wanna know.

You bring the 348 with the fabspeed Upgrades :D I will find a 355! It would be awesome to do a 348 with the power upgrades vs a stock 355! It would be very close.

What about the 348 you guys are using for testing? Trust me, if I was in your neck of the woods I would be totally down for it. We tried something like that last year out hear at Church's, but no 355s showed up to play. :( We dyno'd five 348s the same day. It was fun, but would have been much better if we had other models show up. Maybe next time.

??? There is an 80 hp difference at the crank between a 348 and a 355. I have nothing against Fabspeed (in fact I have your headers on my 355) but that quote is a bit of wishful thinking.

The comparison would be the power difference at the similar rpm. Later model 348s have the rev limiter at 7750rpm. So the comparison would be up to the 348 rev limiter. We could look at what the cars are making at 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7000rpm. I'll bet the power difference is not much if anything at all. The main reason the 355 makes more peak hp is it can spin higher. So the comparison would be under the curve.

Man we need to do another dyno day!

why handicap the F355 shy of peak power?

when you drive em both the 355 feels like it has 60hp more when u give it the beans but sounds it makes it near redline seem like it has 120hp more...

It would be interesting to see the 348 curve superimposed over the 355.

If we could get a bone stock 355 in here for some upgrades, I'd do the stock dyno runs for free. Would prefer a '95 but will take anything.

I don't have any good 'clean' (meaning clear rpm signal throughout the entire run) stock 355 dyno runs, but when I graph a modified 348 vs. a stock 355 referencing vehicle speed instead of engine rpm, the 348 does better than you would think.....it makes a good amount more torque pretty much everywhere except the mid range. Now, the 355 is a 6 spd, so it can be in it's happy zone pretty easily.

A '95 355 bone stock will dyno between 310-315 at the wheels on our dynojet. Right now we are at 286 to the wheels with Dave's 348....I think we can get up around 300 with bolt on modifications.

Nothing will ever equal the sound of a 355, but we can sure come close on the 348! With the full set up the 348 sounds incredible, the brotherhood will be proud! It's been a pleasure to have the 348 here, looking at those door strakes never gets old! Pure 80's goodness!
